German-Inspired but All-American
Later generations of Ford vans took on considerable proportions, ushering in an era of heavy cargo carrying, off-roading, and comfortable camping. When Ford built its first Econoline in 1960, it took inspiration from the VW with a short wheelbase and the driver situated above the front wheels. This would have limited cargo space, making it difficult to load large materials.
Instead, the Econoline’s engine was positioned beneath a broad cover between the driver and front passenger, leaving plenty of room out back for people and stuff.
