For many people Rolls-Royce equates to the highest standards of excellence, opulence and the ultimate excess in luxury. Seemingly miles of deep sumptuous leather, hand craftsmanship, and old-world technology that today might seem outmoded, was once standard for the elite coachmaker, and in many ways it still is.
When you think about today’s luxury cars, many people point to Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Cadillac, Lincoln, Jaguar, Land Rover, and others. Clearly there is a sea of deluxe cars to choose from in the market today. But to us, that standard of world luxury, defined by history, provenance, and the romanticized marquee image, there can be a select few considered in pre-war times like Duesenberg, or Talbot Lago, or even the original Bugatti. And the only true luxury cars that remain today of that old world styling seems to be a Bentley, or more to the point, a Rolls-Royce.
Perhaps our favorite Rolls-Royce story is about John Lennon, Beatle and former owner of a similar bodied psychedelically painted Rolls-Royce Phantom. Without verification we are repeating what we heard on the radio that the late great John Lennon used to ride around in the back of his Rolls-Royce listening to Procol Harum’s song ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale.’ Apparently even the rich and famous enjoy combining the simple things in life like great music with wonderful cars, even though their wheels might be more pretentious than ours.
Today’s Rolls-Royce is a Silver Cloud II LWB model, a model that was produced between 1955-1966, and even today belies its age. It is classic, and yet, in some ways it could almost be mistaken for a brand new Phantom. The more recent Rolls-Royce model designs glance backwards in time to a golden age of Rolls-Royce, pre-Silver Shadow, which in our opinion would be before 1967. We always like to see white wall tires on cars that wear them well, and this car’s color combination of black on cream, coupled with its interior, body lines, and of course that trademark Rolls-Royce front grille, truly make the car. There is a lot right with this vehicle, which forced us to take a second look. Of all the Rolls-Royce’s to own, the right provenance and history is important and a Rolls-Royce of this vintage in this condition is a rarity.
There was once a time when the Beatles, Sinatra, Johnny Cash and other late greats tooled around in Rolls-Royces and Bentleys because they knew those were not just another standard mass-produced luxury car. No, those cars represented world-class luxury. Bid now on this ultimate expression of luxury and opulence of the 1950’s and 1960’s and own a classic expression of ‘having made it in the world.’ This is one that won’t be outdated next year and will always have an aura of sophistication and elitism unmatched by any carmaker in the world.
