Oldsmobile produced the 1960 Super 88 hardtop, like this one recently sold on eBay, in much smaller numbers than the more mainstream full-size Chevrolets of the period. It remains one of the rarest bubble tops you’re likely to find.

The Bubble Top Trend

Full-size (B-body) General Motors two-door hardtops from the late 1950s and early 1960s are known as bubble tops. They’re distinguished by thin, graceful roof pillars with large windshields and back windows. The expansive glass treatment gives the interior an airy feel. The bubble top nickname is most frequently applied to Chevrolet models, but other GM divisions also produced them.

Oldsmobile first applied the bubble-top look to its restyled 1959 Dynamic and Super 88 models. These cars were updated again in 1960. Their smooth, modern features included a new grille, hood, and front fenders. The rear incorporated flatter and smaller fins and new taillights.

Largely Original

The largely original and rust-free Super 88 sold on eBay retains its factory appearance. It looks much like it did the day it left Jones Chevrolet Oldsmobile of Brighton, Colo., 65 years ago. The rear end still bears a sticker from the dealership.

The gleaming white Super 88 bubble top wears most of its factory paint. The original chrome and stainless trim is in like-new condition. That includes the full-length side spears that make this Oldsmobile look so long. A set of original fender skirts adds to the long, low look. The seller mounted wide whitewall tires for a period-correct appearance.

Restored Interior

The Oldsmobile’s interior was completely restored with new components from SMS Auto Fabrics. The tri-colored green and white upholstery brims with 1960s style. So does the chrome-laden twin-cove dashboard. The horizontal speedometer that dominates the driver’s side of the dash turns from green to amber to red as speed increases. Other safety features include a padded dashboard and front and rear seat belts.

The Super 88 came well-equipped from the factory. Standard and optional features on this car include:
  • Power steering and brakes
  • Limited-slip differential
  • Tinted glass
  • Power seat and windows
  • Push-button AM radio

Performance and Style

The Super 88 bubble top was not just about luxury. It was built for performance to match its style. Oldsmobile equipped the Super 88 with the larger and more powerful 394-cubic-inch V-8 from the 98 line.

The 315-horsepower Rocket 394 was built with a forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods - opens in new window or tab., cast aluminum pistons, conical valve springs, and wedge-shaped combustion chambers. This Super 88 still has its factory engine, updated with a Holley Sniper - opens in new window or tab. fuel-injection system for smoother operation.

The Super 88 was produced in relatively low numbers - opens in new window or tab. and had a style all its own. This Super 88 presented an opportunity to own not just a rare bubble top but one in outstanding condition. The car came with original documentation that includes the Protect-O-Plate - opens in new window or tab., warranty book, and owner’s manual. Even the trunk was impressive: What appears to be the original spare tire and jacking instructions sticker were still in place.
