The Fast and Furious movie franchise has given us some of the most iconic movie cars ever created. With the latest Fast and Furious 7 installment now in cinemas, we pick the ten coolest Fast and Furious movie cars.
10. Veilside Mazda RX-7 (Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift, 2006)
When Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift came out, most people couldn’t work out what character Han’s orange and black beast was. That’s because it featured massive body alterations, courtesy of tuning company Veilside that hid its Mazda RX-7 roots. So only car guys (and gals) in the know, knew what it was. The Veilside RX-7 was also part of one of the coolest car chases in Fast and Furious history, where it drifts through congested Tokyo with Sean driving a Mitsubishi Evo and D.K. behind the wheel of a Nissan 350Z. Of course, the chase doesn’t end well for the RX-7 or it’s driver – this is the scene where character Han is killed in a car accident, which inspires the plot for the latest Fast and Furious 7 movie.
9. Dodge Charger Daytona (Fast and Furious 6, 2013)
The Dodge Charger Daytona - opens in new window or tab. was one of the coolest muscle cars of the Seventies, thanks to its awesome styling and massive rear spoiler. It was driven by Vin Diesel’s character Dom in Fast and Furious 6, where he raced through the streets of London with former girlfriend, Letty. She was supposedly killed in a car accident in Fast and Furious 4, but actually suffered memory loss and was taken to London by the movie’s villain. The movie car isn’t completely original--sporting tasteful chrome wheels, and new headlights—but it looked the business.
8. RB26 swapped ‘67 fastback Ford Mustang (The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, 2006)
In Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift this is the car that helps main character Sean (who makes has cameo appearance in Furious 7) seal the deal. The ’67 fastback Mustang uses the drivetrain from a Nissan Skyline GT-R, including the renowned RB26 straight six turbo engine (also seen in a car further down the list *wink). After beating the ‘Drift King’ in a race down a Japanese mountain road in the Mustang, the Yakuza free Sean and his friends, and he gets the pretty girl.
7. 1976 Buick GNX (Fast and Furious, 2009)
We only see the Buick GNX in the opening scene of Fast and Furious, where Dom and his gang try to rob a petrol tanker. The scene ends with the truck spiraling out of control towards an unguarded cliff and many explosions. Dom at the wheel of the Buick remains completely nonchalant and manages to slide the GNX under an exploding fuel tank. Besides the theatrics, the GNX was a total weapon back in its day, producing 276 horsepower from its turbocharged V6. It was stealthy too, finished in all black.
6. Subaru Impreza WRX STI (Furious 7, 2015)
The previous-gen STI hatchback seems to constantly appear in Fast and Furious movies, with Paul Walker’s character at the wheel. A modified silver and black Impreza was used to catch a drug smuggler in the fourth installment of Fast and Furious, then a blue one is used in Fast and Furious 7’s insane plane scene. The guys that engineer the movie cars like Subarus because they’re quick out of the box, virtually indestructible and, obviously, they’re cool.
5. Mitsubishi Evo 7 (2 Fast 2 Furious, 2003)
Sorry Subaru fans, the Mitsubishi Evo 7 in 2 Fast 2 Furious gets a higher rank than the WRX STI. Paul Walker’s character was given the Evo after he was forced to become an undercover officer for the federal agents and help bring down a drug lord. The Evo was fast and when the scenery blurring nitrous was activated it was intensely furious – too much for the Yenko Camaro and Dodge Challenger muscle cars.
4. Ford Escort RS1600 (Fast and Furious 6, 2009)
To Americans, the Ford Escort RS1600 - opens in new window or tab. driven by Paul Walker’s character Brian in Fast and Furious 6, is just a weird little car. But in Europe, this thing is a road and rally legend. A pint-sized muscle car if you will, the RS Escort boasted the best engine Ford and racing company, Cosworth, could manage and race-tuned suspension. The one in Fast and Furious 6 showed off its rallying roots by jumping through the air during the insane tank scene.
3. Toyota Supra (The Fast and The Furious)
‘I owe you a ten-second car’ – the quote that the entire original Fast and Furious movie was based around. This orange Toyota Supra is that ten-second car. It’s the car that Paul Walker’s character Brian and Dom bond over, and it’s the car that ultimately earns Brian Dom’s respect in the end. The Toyota Supra was already a tuner car legend before its role in Fast and Furious, but this movie took it to a whole other level.
2. Dodge Charger (The Fast and The Furious)
In the Fast and Furious movie franchise, the character that refuses to die is actually a car. It’s the mental supercharged Dodge Charger muscle car that Dom built in his garage with his father. At the end of the first Fast and Furious movie, Dom wrecks the Charger while drag racing against Brian in the Supra. Apparently the car is a curse that follows Dom wherever he goes. It makes a comeback in fourth Fast and Furious movie and makes consistent appearances throughout the rest of the series.
1. Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R (2 Fast 2 Furious)
The character Brian always had a soft spot for the Nissan Skyline. It didn’t matter if he had the choice of the most exotic cars in the world, the answer was always GT-R. The Skyline made its first movie appearance in 2 Fast 2 Furious in R34 GT-R form. Personally, this is our favorite car of the whole Fast and Furious franchise – it looked incredible, sounded amazing and won the race in the opening scene by jumping over another car. If you’ve seen the epic prelude to 2 Fast 2 Furious you’ll also know that it started off as scrap metal and Brian improved it as he won races on his way to Miami while avoiding the police. Shame the Skyline was subsequently impounded and destroyed by the police in the opening scene of the movie.
In the fourth movie another R34 GT-R appeared, and this one lasted a lot longer but somehow lacked the theater of the original silver and blue car. In the fifth and sixth movies Brian steps up to the R35 Nissan GT-R - opens in new window or tab. – again cool, but without a manual gearbox to show gear shifts every five seconds, these paddles-only cars weren’t as cool as the older R34.
Another reason why the R34 Skyline went down so well with movie fans was that it was never actually available in America. To American car enthusiasts the Skyline is something of a unicorn – import laws mean that it’s actually illegal to bring them into US, but a handful slip through the net making them extremely rare.
