Product Information

The third installment in John Singleton's trilogy about South Central Los Angeles, HIGHER LEARNING examines mid-1990s university politics from racial, sexual, and economic standpoints. At fictional Columbus University (where a statue of the explorer stands witness to the dominant culture's supremacy), three freshman arrive to find a campus ready to explode. Malik (Omar Epps) wavers among the influences of revolution-preaching super-senior Fudge (Ice Cube), no-excuses Professor Phipps (Laurence Fishburne), and his motivated girlfriend Deja (Tyra Banks). Kristen (Kristy Swanson), another neophyte, is thrown into sexual confusion when she meets a charismatic lesbian, while the socially inept Remy (Michael Rapaport) can only fit in with the local skinheads. The storylines cross and complicate as each character tries to discover what's right, but the potential for violence grows with every wrong choice they make. Singleton recruited an emsemble of considerable talent to flesh out the complex plot, which allows him to deal efficiently with a breadth of concerns without preaching.

Another winner for Ice Cube
I saw the edited version of this movie on tv and decided that I wanted to see it the way it was meant to be seen...uncut, uninterrupted, and unedited. The only way I could accomplish this would be either to rent it or own it, so I decided to own it. It features good actors, and has a believeable storyline. I would recommend this movie to anyone who's following the acting career of Ice Cube. I've found that if he's in a movie, it will be a movie well worth watching, and Higher Learning is no exception.

Higher (Urban) Learning
I was disappointed with John Singleton. The movie symbolically identifies an American Public University , a fictitional "Columbus University" in LA, with Haiti. Blacks are targeted by White Supremacists on an American post-80s college campus. Fellow White students are depicted as Lesbians, Rapists, or White Supremacists. Only women seem to be depicted as balanced in their racial relations. This is a Neocon political fantasy film. There are no white males on this "PUBLIC UNIVERSITY CAMPUS that are depicted as having balanced racial views on campus. Not only that, but they appear to do nothing but drink or prey on white women. Furthermore, no significant White male faculty are depicted. Sadly, we cannot use the film to understand "Higher Learning" in America. It is not reality. "Fast and Furious 2" is also one of the hits of John Singleton.Read full review

Must see movie - increase the peace!
Wow this movie portrayed racial relations in a very negative way. The problem is that this type of behavior does happen and it's sad. There is a lot of violence in this movie but the story is well written. John Singleton directed it and he also did Boyz-N-the-Hood which is another classic. It is really hard to believe how great Michael Rappaport is in this movie. I think of him as the funny dad on the new sitcom he is on. He goes phsyco in this movie and plays the part very well. Check this movie out asap! - gene
