For years, I have not needed a 135mm focal length lens for my Nikon film and digital cameras because the following Nikon manual focus prime lenses have met my telephoto needs: 105mm f/2.5 180mm f/2.8 Also, two 135mm focal length lenses that were left over from my early film days, could still be used on screw-mount film bodies or adapted to digital bodies when I actually needed to use a 135mm focal length: f/3.5 Asahi Super Takumar f/3.5 Fujinon EBC However, recently I have been shooting more stage performances and found the need for a high quality telephoto with more light gathering. To meet my need, I decided to try the Zeiss 135mm f/2 because for years I had heard so much about the construction and performance of Zeiss lenses and Zeiss Sonnar lenses in particular. I was very pleased to discover that the image quality (contrast and resolution) of the 135mm Zeiss f/2 was superior to my 180mm and 105mm Nikon lenses and to my two 135mm screw-mount lenses.Read full review

Stunning results from this portrait lens, even wide open. It is manual focus and quite demanding to use as depth of field is very shallow at wider apertures. A tripod helps a lot for best results.

The only way I could describe this lens is incredible. If you have Otus envy, buy this lens. It's sharp, has incredible bokeh, good color rendition and micro contrast.

If you're reading this review you're probably aware of the reputation of the CZ 135 Apo Sonnar, so I'll skip praising the superb optical quality, and talk about the traits that surprised me. First, it's not quite as heavy as I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, it's -is- heavy, but not to the extent that it feels like a burden. Part of the reason is because it has excellent ergonomics - something very important for a lens this size. Finally, the Carl Zeiss lens hood is very beautiful and very high quality. I never use it. It's valuable and I don't want to damage it. Instead I've been using a cheap third-party 77mm screw-in hood. It's not quite as deep, but it's smaller and lighter than the CZ hood. It protects the front element and I haven't had a problem with flaring. All-in-all, the Apo Sonnar 135 is magnificent and worth every penny (but try to get a good deal on one - they pop up every now and again). Good luck!Read full review
