I decided to buy a Yamaha mainly because they still use discrete transistors in the amp as opposed to IC's which distort and fail easily, which my previous Kenwood and Aiwa AV receivers did..and this Yamaha does not disappoint. Having a stout amp section with low distortion was more important to me than a huge number of features, so I will say that the sound from this receiver, whether you use the DSP or not is superior to any other AV receiver I have listened to, it is very clear, smooth and detailed. The sound effects are pretty much basic AV affairs, the 70MM Adventure setting I think is best with all DVD's and have just left it there, and it does sound wide and spacious wth great dialogue detail, other settings alter the sound only slightly so I wouldn't mess with them. Getting back to the sound...you can hear a huge difference in quality with this receiver, having a very "punchy" hafler sound very similar to the MOSFET's used in a Hafler amp and I would recommend some very stout speakers to be used with this AV receiver, with good LFE ability as this receiver has a setting to allow LFE's to go to your mains rather than a subwoofer..all in all a very easy receiver to set up, and it runs very cool, even after three demanding DVD's. The remote control is capable of controlling a space shuttle, so take some time to set it up, it takes some study as does the manual, but once you do than you will use maybe 4 buttons max, unless you just like pushing buttons, which this remote has more than enough for all you button pushers. Bottom line, get an amp with transistors and a well made amp section which the Yamaha's have and they are plentiful and reasonably priced.Read full review
Very good receiver never said anything about dent on back corner but very happy with the receiver! But i bought this receiver for my room with 7 speakers 4 on main 2 surround and 1 center and 1 subwoofer sounds great but on low power under the 60 mark when turning on the receiver no sound will come out but move the volume knob a little then sound is back only happens after the receiver is first turned on the first time that day after that no problems! very good.
Very clear, powerful sound. it has many "effects" for your listening preference. 7 inputs 6 on back and an Aux on the front which is very useful. it has Optical, Coaxial, and Analog inputs for good high quality audio if desired. Also has Composite and S-video, inputs and outputs. One of the main reasons i bought this excellent receiver is because of the Multi channel input, or external decoder as labeled on the back.
I have had mine since 1998, and have loved it every day. Sound quality is awesome, and still has most of the inputs today's electronics are using, even the high end. It even has ports to plug an external decoder into for new formats. I did have some power up issues with the unit, but sent in for repair and was fixed. My next receiver WILL be another Yamaha, but I'll keep this one around until it turns to dust.
The damn thing never worked no sound no matter what I tried.....I threw it in the trash!!!
