Does an excellent job of detection. Battery is new so hard to determine what it will be like long term. Typically with a full battery and four or five hours of driving it loses 25-50%. My only minor complaint is the accuracy and consistency of the compass function. It always seems to be off 10- 20 degrees and appears to be needing re-calibrated far too often. As far as detection goes, I can say it works very well on Ka band for sure, does a good job of filtering unwanted signals. Have not had it detect laser yet. Have three of these including in my Vette and Maserati (targets for enforcement) and it has alerted every time.

I bought this radar detector as a replacement for an el cheapo that someone had given me. It still works, but I bought into the Whistler name brand. BIG MISTAKE!!! Just came from a long, around the country trip with my family and this device didn't detect police vehicles until I was almost right up on them. Construction zones where my old detector would alert were quiet with this unit. It constantly powered off with a loud, jarring sound preceding the event. It pinged on the most random events ever where no police were nearby. The compass recalibrated itself and refused to give the correct heading. I'll be using my el cheapo in the future as it's more reliable. Ugh. I really want a freaking refund.

It was the only battery operated radar detector in town. I like battery operated radar detectors and no one makes these anymore because of diminishing range issues when batteries run down. The XRT-540 isn't a Solo 2, 3 or 4 because it's top located controls are more cumbersome to turn on, mute, and the unit itself more difficult to remove from the windshield bracket. This unit hasn't really been battlefield tested as all it's alerts were obvious radar positions. On the other hand it uses rechargeable batteries, it's inexpensive and available for now.

Unit is bigger and heavier than I expected. The suction cup mount didn't perform well when attached to my Harley's windshield as the weight of detector caused it to bounce about. I ended up putting it on top of my front brake resivoir with a large thick rubber band to hold it in place. It works well for my 25 minute commute and I've had no problems with it's Auto shut off or short battery life. The one issue I have is the 2 blue lights that flash to alert you. They're to small and blue is an ineffective color choice to get your attention. Keep in mind I'm on a Harley so audiable alert tones don't help. In the daytime I never see the small lights go off. I have to keep an eye on the unit just like mirrors, speedometer, gauges, traffic and everything else. It's not a bad detector and for a car I'm sure it's fine, but for a motorcycle I doubt I'd buy it again.Read full review

Ok for the price, consider other name brand models for $40 or under as well. This one has an edge over the others because of its ability to go cordless.
