I broke my awl bought in the 60's, and needed a replacement. This awl is made in the U.S., and is moderately priced. It has a limitation [not a defect], since its mandrel does not go all through the handle. My old one did, with a flattened head at the handle so that you could tap it with a mallet. On the old one, the wooden handle could actually slide down the mandrel. That gave it much greater strength when striking the head to mark a drill hole, for instance. This one has its steel buried in the handle. Strike the head hard enough and you just might split the handle. So I'll limit my marking to hand pressure. Very good price, and nice size.

The tool is made in China and they have changed the USA makers original design. The spike doesn’t go through the handle and you will not be able to hammer the tool without breaking the handle. Unless you’re only going to scratch with it, I wouldn’t buy this, go with a used one made in USA. My fault for not noticing that it was made in China, my recommendation is don’t buy!
