This British mini-series is at its core, "X-Files" for anglophiles. Each episode has a self contained plot that Mulder and Scully would be at home with, but also includes the forensic suspense any lover of British mystery crime dramas such as "Cracker", "Touching Evil" or "Prime Suspect would enjoy. Overall, however, is the complicated, suspenseful, even scary idea that the world has been overrun with "Leeches", vampires who are multiplying and planning eventual domination of the human race. Many interesting ideas about survival and genocide are brought up as a secretive agency funded by the Catholic Church hunts down every "leech" they can find. The main character is Micheal--wonderfully played by Jack Davenport--a man whose best friend disappears on the eve of his wedding. His obsession with getting to the bottom of this mystery drops him into the dangerous world of Angels and Leeches. The word vampire is not used throughout the whole series, and the sight of vampires "feeding" is kept to a minimum. Storytelling and atmosphere steps in where special effects and shock value are absent. Difficult subjects are covered such as abortion, pedophilia and religion but all tastefully handled leaving the viewer wishing there were at least six full seasons of this series.Read full review
I rented this miniseries a few years ago and loved it. When I saw this from a seller on ebay I had to buy it. Ultraviolet is a british miniseries concerning vampires but it's done in such a way that there is not really much in the way of gore and no fangs. It's a tense and suspenseful series about an agency that handles the extermination and research on Code V's (vampires). All of the characters are very strong and the unusual thing about this series is that the focus is not on vampires but rather on the people in this agency. It instantly bonds you to them in a way that I have not seen in some time. Very well done!
This is definitely not the average or even "normal" vampire series as the word Vampire is not used at all. Not even one time! It was produced for the BBC and was incredibly well done not only in the story line but in the dialogue and visual effects too. It is very fast paced and was unfortunately canceled after only one season. It definitely leaves you wanting more but not able to get it. I wrote to the BBC several times trying to find out if a second season would ever be in the works but my emails were not answered. If you like this gendre -then this is a must have for your collection.
THIS WAS A PURCHASE FOR MY COUSIN WHO I HAD RECOMMENDED THIS SERIES A WHILE BACK. THIS BBC MINI-SERIES HAS DISAPPOINTED MANY FAN'S NOT BECAUSE THEY DISLIKED IT, BUT BECAUSE THE PROMISED FOLLOW-UP HAS YET TO APPEAR. A VERY INTELLIGENT TAKE ON VAMPIRES FAR ABOVE ANY OTHER ATTEMPT. WELL ACTED AND THOUGHT OUT. FAR AWAY FROM THE FOLLISH NITE CLUBS AND BLOOD & GORE NONSENSE. ONE OF MY FAVORITES. ONE NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE ENTIRE SERIES BEFORE ANY CONCLUSIONS. THE END WILL LEAVE YOU WANTING MORE LIKE THE REST OF US. THE FOX NETWORK DID A PILOT FOR A SERIES BASED ON THIS WHICH NEVER WENT ANYWHERE. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Very interesting series. Rented it on a whim and was very impressed. One thing to keep in mind - these are not meant to be watched as 6 - 1hour episodes; the whole thing is meant to be seen as a 6 hour show so each episode on its own may not be the most thrilling but each builds upon the others and creates a very entertaining and unusual story. Technical specs - it is in widescreen format but it is not made for 16x9 tvs so there is a black border around the show(black bars on the top/bottom and on the sides). The dvd is almost 10 years old so they did of the 16x9 enhancement like they do now.
