Great entertainment! Great actors! I'm in love with the characters. Definitely on the dark side. Must love Vampires, Witches, Werewolves and more.

Capitalizing on the current vampire craze, The Vampire Diaries initially appeared to be a knockoff of Twilight with its "older vampire falls in love with high school girl" hook. While the two stories do share that much in common, I was more than happy to discover that The Vampire Diaries was actually far more than just that one storyline. It was a weekly dose of intriguing characters and speedy plot twists. While Vampire Diaries' town of Mystic Falls is apparently cursed like Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sunny Dale to attract trouble, Mystic Falls just has the vampires to worry about, so far at least. There were some pretty clear hints about werewolves that are sure to pop up in the second season. Every vampire story needs werewolves nowadays, apparently. With the town's characters and family ties dating back more than a century, the conflicts reach larger-than-life levels, something that is helpful for a show with so many soapy elements. Not only are the characters deeply connected to each other, but they are connected to the history of the town. The historical aspect of the show has the additional benefit of flashbacks. We get to see the Salvatore brothers back when they were mere mortals, both in love with the same girl. That is where we were introduced to Katherine, the vampire who turned both brothers. Dobrev must have fun playing Katherine, a character who is the polar opposite of Elena. With quite a few cliffhangers in the finale, The Vampire Diaries needn't worry that fans will forget to tune in next season to find out what happens next. Hopefully the show will be this much fun again next year.Read full review

******FYI everyone... the vampire diaries were written well before twilight.******* so, if you were worried that tvd would be a "knock off" you'll have to look to twilight for that. i first read the vampire diaries as a young girl. the story is engaging and beautiful. i was worried when i heard of all the changes being made to produce a tv series from these beloved books. while the changes are great, i am pleased that the story remains intact and wonderful. the production value is fantastic, which cannot be said for other vampire novels that have made their way to a (big) screen. yes, i mean twilight. (come on, the films are atrocious!) the vampire diaries is a separate entity; beautiful, horrifying, humorous, well done... and so forth. one of the best shows on television. the ONLY one worth watching on thursday nights.Read full review
I missed the entire first season of this series, but heard from friends that it was great, so ordered it on DVD. I loved it so much I watched all 22 episodes in two days, and have watched them all a second time. Teen and adult fans of "Twilight" may love this series even more than the films based on the Stephanie Meyer books. Gorgeous characters, superb acting, fascinating plot twists, lots of action and romance and incredible effects. What more could any sci-fi fan want? I can't wait for Season two to come out on Blu-ray so I can watch all the eposides over again!
