My cable system does not carry the FX channel where this was originally aired. So after all the hoopla I heard about this series, I had to investigate. Well, the premier certainly lived up to my expectations. This is a fast moving drama that I enjoyed disc after disc. However after about ten episodes it got redundant how no matter how deep the s__t hole was these guys fell in, they always came out smelling like a rose. I'd say the superiority complexes that most of these cops showed was probably right on. My experiences with the boys in blue suggests that even though the are paid to uphold the law the also think they are above it!!! Glad to see that exposed on television.
Okay Michael chiklis stars as Vic Mackey, and honestly I thought this should be boring, and pointless, but I was wrong. This show it's interesting, entertaining, and it constantly keeps you grabbing at the edge of your seat. This show blow for blow matches Rescue Me evenly as far as season 1 goes. I'm happy with the purchase. Walton Goggins is amazing in the show as well. Kurt Shutter did a good job so far I'm on season 2 now when I finish it up I'll review that one too. It's a 5 star show, and I highly recommend it. Just don't take my word for it. Buy season 1 of the shield. After the first couple of episodes I am willing to wager you'll be hooked just as much as I am.
Verified purchase: No
After five seasons of being a faithful viewer of the show, I felt it was time to go back and see it from the beginning. The DVD's not only provide insight, but any show without commercials has become my reason to purchase. I have bought all the subsequent seasons, because watching the first season on DVD was so much more enlightening and provocative. Networks like FX, TNT, Sci-FI and USA can provide great shows that are off the grid for regular networks. However, even with TIVO the constant interruptions take a toll on the storyline. I have also purchased "Carnivale" (which was not renewed), Rescue Me, Lost and several other shows whose seasons were cancelled and not completely aired. The Shield stands up after repeated viewings. It has passed the litmus test of all syndicated shows. The writing is tight, the characters are well-written and constantly suprising and the pacing is incredible. The casting for the principals and the peripheral characters rarely fails to hit the mark. For a simplified version of this critic, think of the DVD's for the all the seasons like this: My roommate calls each season "entertainment Crack". He can't stop wathching and most people won't be able to.Read full review
Vic Mackey is fantastic! I had never even heard of the Shield until a friend recommended that I take it for a spin... after the first couple episodes, I had already met a large cast of characters, been introduced to many twisting and connecting plots, and become fascinated by the tightly designed / scripted storyline. Vic Mackey is the star of the show - a cop dedicated to cleaning the streets and serving his community. But the show is filled with great characters and strong acting... The real star of the show though is the storyline which is amazingly addictive. Other than Lost - a personal favorite of mine - The Shield is my favorite TV show of the past few years. The great thing about the Shield is that it maintains and improves over time. You will enjoy Seasons 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 - other shows struggle with that (ie Nip/Tuck). Do yourself a favor and enjoy Vic Mackey and The Shield! I am an eBay employee and this review reflects my personal views and is not written on behalf of the eBay companyRead full review
If there is any T.V. show that could prove to anyone that they are pushing the limits further each year with ratings, it's The Shield. The first time I watched it, I wasn't considering the fact that I was watching it on television. When I heard Vic using his choice of words, I had to do a double take. His relationship with Dutch boy has got to be one of the best. It would seem that he hates him, yet he respects his detective abilities. You wonder how it can be that there is any way the two of them can get along in any respect. Aceveda.. where do I start? You know that he has it out for Vic from the get go, but the Chief is it on it and therefore he will never be able to touch him in a million years. That doesn't stop him from trying though. All I have to say is, this is a show you have to watch from the beginning to understand the characters and their development. It's well worth the time and the money.Read full review
