I was unable to put the book down! It was a quick read, lacking details which would have caused too many detours. It reads like a novel; that it is a memoir is remarkable. It's an exciting slice from the lives of three coming-of-age young black men, committed to each other and their mutual determination to become successful medical doctors. They tell of their clever use of the resources presented to them in bleak, often frightening, life circumstances, their personal grit and resolve, and the power in their mutual promise to see each other to success. All this with no role models. The book powerfuly accomplishes what it intends to. Every young adult looking for direction would be encouraged by reading the doctors' story. I am looking for the sequel! Or - even better! - for stories from others who were inspired by these courageous men.Read full review
I had previously read The Pact with my class of students when the book first came out. I purchased it again for my son who had to read it for a class. Since I am also from the same city of the three young men and had also attended the same university, I was able to associate and connect with their struggles in life and their desire to excel because I saw myself in a similar situation. It is a very good book!
I’m not a good reader because I always get distracted and never finish a book but this book kept me focused till I finished it
