Excellent cold war thriller starring Rutger Hauer as an investigative reporter made to believe that his best friends are Soviet spies. Everything comes to a head when the friends gather for their annual vacation weekend, known as the Osterman weekend, named after their friend and founder, Bernie Osterman. Craig T. Nelson, Chris Sarandon and Dennis Hopper all star as friends and alleged Soviet spies with Burt Lancaster and John Hurt as agents of the goverment determined to enlist the reluctent Hauer's help in uncovering whatever plot the three may have. Twists and turns with a surprise ending. Craig T. Nelson is fantastic as Bernie Osterman in this must see thriller.
With whatever expectations I may have had about this movie, I had no idea what I was in for. As a long time fan of Robert Ludlum I can hardly believe it is anything that he would have been proud of. The poor acting, poor writing and poor directing of the film alone is enough to deserve it to be classified as an abysmal failure, but that fact that it is riddled with enough sex and nudity to fall under the category of a triple X porn movie was more than I could take. This movie has got to be the absolute worst movie in history. If your looking for Ludlum, you'll have to look elsewhere.
Saw this film years ago on VHS. It is a timeless classic. Glad to see the transfer to DVD so my kids can enjoy it as I have. My only hope is other greats like the Amateur would one day make it to DVD as well. Grover
