This movie has very powerful themes that deal with mentacide, genocide and fratricide. There is great love and deep hate that moves people from a place of sanity to the point of absolute madness. The setting is a "mythical" country in West Africa; where there has been a spiritual and psychological tear- now chasm between two indigenous groups- the Bonandés and the Nayaks. The chasm of confusion, superstition, a narrow worldview and insanity propels the two groups to work to destroy each other's very existence. There are atrocities at "Govinda", like the real life raw barbarity that took place in Rwanda; that in moved the Hutus (puppets) to murder/suicide the Tutsis (more puppets) and in the very same process, themselves at the behest of "others." This movie portrays the stark and glaring realities of war and desperation. The film offers moving portrayals of love, hate, grief, madness and the hope of reconciliation. English subtitles. There are a few moments of comedic relief. Warning: Graphic scenes of the atrocities. It is an excellent film. However, the film does not provide an historical understanding as to why these African people were driven to such terrifying and deadly decisions and actions. Was there a hidden hand, a master manipulator? Highly probable... If you require a fast paced cops and robbers mass appeal movie with lots of car chases and sexual content, this film may not satisfy your desires.Read full review
