I have always enjoyed Irvin Chernev's unique take on the games he has included in his books. Content is compelling, well covered, and in many cases with good humor and coverage of alternate possible stages in a game. While this book uses the "older" terminology for moves and positions, it is not too hard to follow once you get used to it. I am currently working through this fine book and adding algebraic moves for the positions for future reference. I have heard this version is a bit better than the follow up one done later with algebraic as this book version apparently has not had extra edits that the newer version does, which many have mentioned makes this version the better of the two. I estimate this to be more of an intermediate level to advanced level book, so buy at your own risk. IMO, this is a MUST have for those chess enthusiasts and students of the game wishing to see some unique strategies and tactics in well-laid-out commentary. Recommended! (highly)Read full review

Published 50 years ago some of the analysis is “old” school. But Chernev was such a good writer that the games are an easy read and study. It’s a good way to get exposed to a few dozen of the greatest games ever played. Each game builds on a specific and unique idea, eg. “complete domination of the Black squares.” I highly recommend.

I like how the Chess Games were selected. Each game has a motif , a central Theme. Expl. "King side attack", "Isolated Pawn", "Exchanging pieces for a better ending"...All games are clearly explained. Very instructive. Javier
I am a chess book collector. This book has a wide assortment of very instructive chess games, whether you are a novice or an expert in chess. Chernev is a classic chess book writer. Excellent book.
If you can handle the old, archaic style of notation, this is simply a fantastic book. The old notation style actually helps me slow down and ponder Chernev's insights all the more. A must have book if you are in the middle stages of chess development!
