This Flick is a 1977 remake of the classic HG Wells novel ISLAND of LOST SOULS and was released by American International Pictures and was named THE ISLAND of Dr MOREAU. This film stars Burt Lancaster as the mad scientist who changes animals into humans. (Charlton Heston was offered this role but declined because of other commiments at the time.) Lancaster was offered the role which was his first (and only) science fiction role to which he does a brilliant job of portraying Moreau. Co-starring with Lancaster and fresh off his role from 1975's THE THREE MUSKETEERS is British actor Michael York in the role of Mister Braddock the sole survior of a sunken ship and becomes one of Moreau's mad experiments as the Laws of Nature are put to the test by Moreau's twisted mad ambitions! Joining Lancaster and York in his next to last screen role is Richard Basehart as the Sayer of the LAW. Basehart was famous as Admiral Nelson of famed tv show Voyage to the Bottem of the Sea from the 1960's. The famous make up that was applied in this film was the same methods that was used in Planet of the Apes, which won a special Oscar in 1968 for Best Creative Make Up. This film sadly though has been discontinued and has been out of print since 2001. So if you come across it, and want to add a good film for your movie library this is one film that would be that one to add. In 1996 a remake of this film starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer was released, other than the make up created on the animal and beast men in that film....its nothing but a piece of rubbish, and should be of print and banned not this 1977 version of THE ISLAND OF DR. Great scifi / horror classic. Burt Lancaster in a very different role does a wonderful job. The DVD arrived early in great condition.

Great cast, good story, and very good special effects and make up for the era in which it was produced. I feel this version is far and away superior to the laughable Marlon Brando version.

.I saw this movie at the theater when it first came out. I wasn't very old so didn't understand much at the time but always remembered the bear. Watching it again was very entertaining. There is a version with Val Kilmer and Marlon Brando but is more gimmicky. I like the Burt Lancaster version better.
