Dark City, The Matrix, and The Thirteenth Floor all came out between 1998 and 1999 and basically revolve around the same theme; reality is not what it seems. While in my opinion Dark City is the best of the three, they all have a unique take on the concept and offer individual aesthetic styles. The 13th floor is a nod to the 1930s, the Matrix fully embraces a post apocalyptic cyber punk future, and Dark City lands somewhere between with its film noir framework as well as its goth style and Japanese Anime influence. Dark City is the most unhinged with the strongest vision making it totally unique. The Thirteenth Floor is a great film with strong performances, and while it may be far more traditional when compared to the likes of the Matrix and Dark City, it has its own charm and has aged quite well.Read full review
