. . . but either way, this is one of the most solid, believable translations available. They're not trying to be authentic to the point of making it obscure and unreadable and they're not pandering to the artsy-fartsy PC new age crowd, either. Just understandable and readable. Recommended.

Although I do not speak Chinese, this is the best translation of the classic Tao Te Ching I've ever seen. It captures the laconic style of the author in a way westerners never have. The black and white full-page photos by high-energy particle physicist Jane English make a superb backdrop for both the Chinese calligraphy by Gia-Fu Feng, the translator, and the translations themselves. Whether you're a long-time lover of the Tao Te Ching, or have never been exposed to it before, this book will open your mind and spirit. I recommend it unconditionally.
Excellent book...One of the greatest books of all time! Plus it's a very easy read...a series of 81 short poems. Enjoy!

I bought my first copy of this translation in 1973 when I graduated from college. I immediately found it to be inspirational and centering. I actually went on to become a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, partly because of the Taoist approach that can be incorporated into that form of medicine, and have practiced and taught Oriental medicine happily for 30 years now. I bought this copy most recently for my college aged daughter, and hope she'll crack it open; I know that if she does, she will be able to relate to it. This is the best translation of this classic book.
Highly recommend to do business with!
