It's a fairly close storyline to Pat Conroy's novel based on his own upbringing. Robert Duvall's portrayal gives realistic insight to fighter pilot mentality and the tragedy when he carries it over into his family life. Blythe Danner had to swallow a lot of pride to play the military wife "expected" to succumb to her husband's lifestyle. They're both outshone by a young Michael O'Keefe (a teen in 1979) as he "grows" on the screen, maturing in his role as the colonel's son desperately seeking his father's approval.

After having read a number of Pat Conroy's literary pieces, this one included, I decided to purchase the movie. It was a bit dated as it was filmed in the early 1990's I believe, and of course the movie can never come close to covering in detail what the book does. All in all, the actors/actresses were great in portraying the characters in the book. Key things were left out,due to time constraints, I suppose, but the "gist" was covered. Bottom line, if you've read the book, you should also see the movie, if for no other reason, Robert Duvall did a great job portraying Bull Meecham, the Marine fighter pilot, aka The Great Santini! IT is rated PG.

Great movie. I already owned this movie but after years it started skipping. When I searched I was happy to find this. The price was great and it is exactly like the old one.
