I’m a humbucker guy, but every few years I try my hand a building a good Strat. With these pickups from SME, I finally feel like I have succeeded. Their sound is rich and details, yet still offer that familiar Alnico magnet punch a single coil should have. Positions 2 and 4 have the requisite quack. The bridge, for once, isn’t too uselessly bright nor hopelessly overwound. Add a switch to click on the neck pickup with the bridge and there’s even a bit of Tele in these. With all three pickups on a once, the output is a bit like an acoustic with some bright sparkle to go along with those rich, full Strat tones. For the very small price, these hand-wound pickups really deliver remarkable ‘65 Strat tones. If this is what the originals sounded like, I can see now why they sold like hot cakes! I didn’t go with the hotter ones which replicate the late 60’s tone. These ‘65s are the ticket for me!Read full review

These pickups are amazing guys! The quality and solders are meticulously well done, very impressed, someone took their time to make these, not a 5 minute china job. I installed them myself, nothing fell apart or broke off, just good 'ol American Quality! The only reason I think they are going for $60(as opposed to $100+), is because the brand is not well known...that's it, but the quality is Easily equal or better to Top Brands. I have a set on my Jap Strat, and they totally changed the sound. I really like jamming in my garage, just crank up the Vibro Champ tube and you would Swear I'm playing threw a 65 fender strat. I was skeptical for $60, I thought they would sound flat and no range...but they have a very meaty, 3d Tone, maybe light-to-moderately Hot(boosted) sound, depending on which pickup you turn on. I must say, the Neck pickup absolutely COOKS, just a nice Fat Jimi sound! But I honestly can't believe people waste money on pedals to sound like Jimi or Stevie, pick-ups are what makes all the difference.Read full review

These pickups aren't "good for the price", they ARE good. I bought a set a few years ago and I was really disturbed by them because until then my favorite pickups were Rio Grande Dual Calibrated set. Of course you know I paid WAY MORE than I did for these SMEs. That just can't be possible. I'm not saying they are better as tone and sound are subjective...even to my own moods. But I am saying that these are quality pickups and that I can't see how someone could be disappointed. Especially with the price for a set being near what a single pickup would cost. I currently own Fat 50s, CS 69, 57/62, TexMex, several Rio Grande, Seymour Duncans, Dimarzio, GFS...you get the idea. I have plenty to compare to and have had many others over the last 30 yrs. Do yourself a favor and try out a set. They could turn out to be your go to set or just a change of pace on a backup guitar. Either way you'll enjoy the fact that you bought quality at a great price. Or you might be disturbed and in denial for months like I was. And No i don't have any affiliation with SME.Read full review
