We have been reading Story of the World books for about 3 years. Volume 1 is Ancient History. . The author gives the facts and does not slant the books toward any religion. The Middle Ages tells of Castles, Kings and Barbarians and wars. There were a few events explained as they happened, so the first time through, we skipped a few chapters, when my children were young. However, they are now old enough to read the stories and have liots of questions. Volume 3 and 4 are based on more current modern times. These books have been great for elementary, middle and high-school age children. I bought the books for my children to read as I either read to them or the cd was played. the The narrator has a wonderful voice, which helps the younger children stay engaged in the story. There are also workbooks available to purchase, which contain questions and projects for each chapter. I would definitely recommend these books!Read full review

Story of the World: History for the Classical Child, Vol. 1: Ancient Times is absolutely fantastic. Written in narrative, my 8 year old could easily read this and understand, yet it is fascinating for adults to read as well. I read it to my 8-10 year olds. They enjoyed listening and would ask for me to read each day. I would ask them to share what they remembered from the day before, before reading. The activity teaching book (purchased separately) has wonderful projects and ideas. There is also a test booklet that goes with this.

I think this book is a good overview of history and is a great supplemental reader. I do not recommend it as a stand-alone curriculum. Whether or not you like it depends on how your child learns. It is written like a chapter-book for reading, not like a text-book. It gives factual information and has stories to go along with the facts to put them into a memorable context. It contains a few black and white pics, similar to a novel that might have pics. There is no end-of-chapter terms or discussions or questions as in text-books.

This is a wonderful series that covers the highlights of world history in highly readable and interesting format. I would highly recommend it for elementary school students as it has a high-interest value.
