I've been using this book for over 25 years and it has taught me and continues to teach me how to grow nutritious and beautiful vegetables in an incredibly small space. There are so many ideas about how to manage your time, energy and resources that will allow you to become a real star in the gardening world! Mel has covered so many aspects of gardening that this should be required reading for anyone who wants to grow veggies. There are chapters on the best ways to set out the parameters of your growing space, plant seeds, make your own fertilizer, tend to the maturing plants, when and how to harvest and so much more. I refer to this book every growing season and this purchase was a gift for a friend who is just starting out in gardening.

I used this book in the 1990's and had a garden for years. The method Square Foot Gardening takes some upfront prep and you are rewarded with little to no weeds and a very productive garden. I followed the methods in the New SFG book but that book doesn't have the details this 1st edition has. Your best bet is to have both books, the New one for creating your garden setup, then the this 1st edition for plant details. Lot of great ideas to make gardening fun instead of work!

Excellent book for beginner vegetable gardeners. In simple terms, Mel lays out the perfect space-saving method for organically growing lots of veggies, building garden structures, maintaining the garden, and harvesting it. In my opinion, this original book is much better than his newer editions that I also own. I started gardening in 1992 using this book and still refer to it every year.

My brother recommended this book a few years ago, and its been extremely usefull. Sure it's over 25 years old, but the information in it is still relevent. How many people still garden in rows in the ground? How old is that technic? My family uses a modified version of Square Foot Gardening and have had really good results. The book covers: bed preperation, garden structures, planting times, harvesting tips, and so forth. For those gardeners with limited space or who don't want a big garden, this book is for you. The method allows for constant crop rotation. The ability to grow a large amount of plants in a little space. It also limits overproduction. You don't get masses of eggplants or tomatoes that you can't get rid of. The best part about it is Square Foot Gardening is flexible. If you don't like something you change it. You are gardening on a smaller scale. So problems with crops are limited, and if something goes wrong it's not the end of the world. Practice fearless gardening people. Gardening is supposed to be a relaxing hobby, not a chore. ThanksRead full review
I first checked this book out at the library during the middle of the winter when I was dreaming of the coming gardening season. I work on a farm, and have a garden of my own to manage, so I do lots of gardening. More and more I am looking for gardens that are both productive and easy to manage and keep under control. This method is perfect for creating an easy to maintain garden. I am doing both my own garden and my work garden using this method now. It is so adaptable and can be used on a farm or a suburban backyard container garden. The book is very easy to read and follow. I prefer the older versions of the book as the newer version is very tailored to suburban container gardening using purchased soil materials. This is great, but if you are looking to have a larger, traditional garden with less work, I recommend the older versions. I have already purchased several other copies to give to friends and family.Read full review
