Powerful lyrics and no samples. At the time this album came out, there were only two bands doing hip-hop with a real band: the Roots, and Spearhead. This album covers a lot of ground musically, and was a massive departure from Micheal Franti's previous group, Disposable Heroes of Hiphopracy. Instead of the industrial influenced dark hip-hop of that band, Spearhead was far more organic in its sound and style, and the lyrics were lighter ("Red Beans and Rice", "People in the Middle"), but also more introspective at times ("Positive", "Hole in the Bucket"). The instrumentation on this album is amazing as well. Franti put together a solid group of musicians to back him up, and every song on this album has gotten stuck in my head at least a couple dozen times since this album first blessed my earholes with its awesomeness. This came out in 1994, and it remains to this day one of my favorite albums of not only hip-hop, but of ANY genre of music. It really is THAT good.Read full review

I saw Franti and Spearhead this past Summer. I thought they rocked and were great entertainers. I thought it would be fun to listen to more of their music. Wow was I disapointed by this CD. It is nothing like what I saw in concert. Live performances can be very different than studio albums I will give you. This Cd was nothing more than bubble gum disco stuff.
