I am disappointed with this Sony product. I have purchased several Sony Model TCM portable Cassette recorders over the years - all but one of them pre-owned, and all have been satisfactory. This is my first complaint. These recorders are ideal for my job - proof reading documents. With this model TCM 359V It is impossible to hear/listen to a previously recorded cassette without plugging in the earphones to the ear jack. The microphone is inaudible, even with the volume set to high, to hear if earphones are not plugged in. Once plugged in - the sound is fine. The microphone seems to work adequately when I voice record onto a cassette, but cannot listen w/o plugging in the earphones. The cassettes are brand name "Normal" Type 1 - and not metallic ones - and usually 60 minute tapes.

The TCM359V is a nice cassette recorder. The speed control knob is fun to play with and useful for reviewing voice recordings and for creating interesting sounds and effects for experimental music. It is very similar to the TCM200DV, except it includes a tape counter and does not include the speed switch. But the speed knob gets a decent range on it's own. I recommend this cassette recorder.
