I bought this to replace my 3 years old Panasonic HD camcorder. The old one perform poorly under low light condition. I expected the new camcorder to do well in the night, steady and have shallow of depth of field. PJ710 exceeds my expectation for the first 2 requirements, shallow DOF is not so good. Anyway, not consumer camcorder can handle this right now. === Pro: For the low light performance, I shot some videos for Las Vegas night view. A little bit grainy, but way much better than the previous one. I am quite satisfied with the result. -- Built in Wide Angel Lens: The wide angle lens are built in with the camcorder. Previous one, I had to attach a wide angle lens and never took it off. It makes the machine so bulky. It is such a great idea to integrate it into the camcorder. I did try to use a wide angle lens for PJ710. But due to their liquid anti-shake system, the edges sometimes get blocked by the lens when the inner lens flows. So be careful to choose an additional lens. -- Steady System: Wow! This one really shines. It's looks like there is fluid between the inner lens and the shell, so when the hand shakes a bit, it won't affect the video image at all. If the hand moves a lot, the fluid will smooth the movement greatly. I was thinking to buy a steady-cam. Now, I just saved $700. Even if this camcorder only has this upgrade, it totally worth the money. -- Image: Video image is very sharp with vivid color. The still image sucks, even compare to the SGS III. But who will use it to shoot still images? That's DSLR's job. == Cons: Weight: It's a tad heavier than CX series, which doesn't pack the projector. I do not put into the projector much of use. I usually edit all the clips before showing to others. It just adds weight. However, could not find CX730 or CX760 at a reasonable price. Anyhow, I can handle the extra weight. -- 32G is a bit shy. But you can get a class 10 32G SD card for $20 at eBay. So not a big concern. -- Battery comes with the camcorder is not that big. You may have to recharge it every night after put some use. I order another FV70 from eBay as well. Another thing I ordered is the charger and a circular polarize filter. === All in all, it is a wonderful camcorder and I love it so much. Ready for the next trip now!Read full review
I've been a micro-budget film maker for many years now, and I've gone through my fair share of dslr/camecorders, And for the price, this one has been by far the best. Not only is it pretty affordable, but the video quality is nothing short of outstanding. And compared to a dslr, this camera is so easy to use, just point and shoot for great video. I actually had one of these, and sold it to my other filmaker friend. But soon after, I began to regret it, and after trying and not liking 2 other cheaper alternatives(Canon products), I saved up and bought this camera again. And I just have to mention, the image stabilization... Wow. The OIS works miracles in keeping the picture perfectly stable, I think not even an earthquake could make this baby's picture shaky! Well, of course there are better cameras out there for more money, but for the price, this camera just can't be beat!Read full review
I puchased this camcorder "almost new" and from everything I could see it hadn't been used at all. I started using video cameras when VCR tapes was the storage medium and I've used just about every other variation of camcorder since then. I wanted a very good prosumer 1080P camcorder with solid state storage and Consumer Reports rated this camera as the best non-professional camera available. In having used it now for about two months, I agree. The quality of image from this camera is simply amazing. The wealth of in-camera options is mind boggling. The only thing that I didn't like about the camera besides it's size (it's VERY small in my hands) is if you have the optical image stabilization turned on while recording a moving object in the distance. This seems to fool the camera and it tends to drift. The solution is to turn off the I.S. but that kind of defeats the purpose. That quibble aside, it's an outstanding camera and now I only need to find out how well it holds up. The Sony I bought 10 years ago that uses Hi8 digital tape still works perfectly so if this one is as durable I'll be very impressed. Highly recommended.Read full review
It is the best camcorder from the last line of SONY camcorders I had chance to use. The picture quality is just outstanding, (not comparing to pro-level camcorders). The zoom is little too fast, but it compensates with super fast focusing. Only one thing which makes me worry is the "error E:91:01" to occur, what did happen to the two previous models with build in LED flash light, (HDR-PJ50V and HDR-XR350V) after 2 to 3 months of use. It is significantly heavier then the two other camcorders even without build HDD. Picture stabilization is impressive. Still pictures are questionable, but I am not taking too many pictures with this camcorder anyway. The standard included battery lasts as advertized, circa 1 hour and change, depends on how much focus is being used. Great consumer grade camcorder.Read full review
This camera is simply amazing. Expensive in comparison to other cameras, but more than worth it. The menu system is a little tricky to navigate, but not an issue once programmed. Would probably need a higher capacity battery for longer than 1 1/2 hr. shooting sessions. Do yourself a favor and save up to get this one; it relieves many headaches.
