When I saw this film at the theater, it left me with a very mixed impression. The movie swerves from moments of utter stupidity into split seconds of astounding brilliance. The effect is so disorienting that it actually makes for a very refreshing experience, so different from the usual homogenous mediocrity of hollywood slash/fantasy films that set a bland tone at the start then relentlessly stick to it. One moment I would be on the verge of getting up to demand my money back, only to have my jaw drop in astonishment before I could rise from the chair. So for that reason I kinda liked it. The actress who plays the lead role (can't remember her name, she's a newbie I think) has this really annoying 'shreiky' voice that grates on you even when she isn't screaming, but the supporting female cop is a delight; every mannerism and 'butch' scowl is just down to perfection. Le cop absolut. The atmosphere of the town in which the events take place is creepy and well done. A persistent grey ash falls from the sky, like fallout, from underground fires that burn in abandoned mines (shouldn't it fall up?) Now while all of this ash is falling around, at one juncture the main character looks at a burned door and gasps: 'Hey, it looks BURNT!' (See what I mean? Anyway, there are enough weird images to keep you riveted in anticipation. It does parallel the game SILENT HILL fairly closely at points, but not slavishly. Some of the hokier elements are mercifully absent from the film. The best part was the ending. Definately NOT the hollywood type. If you are into dark gothic fantasy, and who isn't around Halloween, check this one out. You will love the half-dancing babe-licious platoon of nurses with human hearts instead of faces. I give it 4 out of 5 on the mars-bonfire scale of astonishing genius. I much prefer a flawed diamond over the alternative of contemptible perfection. Don't you?Read full review
Silent Hill is based on the horror video game series of the same name. Having played one of them, I spotted many ways this adapation successfully pulled from the source, such as the transitions between normalcy and darkness. The strong suits of the film are its special effects: namely the town/fog and the creatures, most of which are done without CGI, a plus in my book. The weaknesses come from the flow of the film: running and exploring with a little combat works better as a game than as a movie. However, the film does a better job than the game of explaining the town's dark past and has a fitting climax. However, it then ends on a confusing note. I also wish they had used Pyramid Head more. Overall, the film is still a good one. It's not that great a horror film, but its pretty good for a video game adaptation, which are usually fairly poor. The DVD extras are nice, lots of behind the scenes for each aspect of the film from special effects to actors and so on.Read full review
When I saw this movie I was expecting it to be very interesting, since I had been reading about it on the IMDB forums. I had never played one of the Silent Hill games and I have never really been a horror movie fan. I was right though, this movie is very interesting and I liked it. It has put a big foot forward in video game movies, even if the Silent Hill games were terrible in cinematic and dialogue categories. This movie doesn't try to scare you by surprising you (turn a corner and something jumps out) instead, it tries to creep you out (disturbing sights that are sometimes dragged on to be even creepier). There is not much dialogue and that is a good thing a lot of the dialogue is bad (ties to the game...). It has a very good story and stays very close to the game, including a lot of monsters from the game and a newer, less confusing story. The visuals, as you might have heard, are very good and look just like the game (sometimes the camera moves just like the game's). It is a very unique, interesting, good, and creepy movie and worth a seeing. I would suggest that you should plan not to be scared or surprised, but to experience a different story and a cool journey. I would not put this movie into the horror or thriller genre, but into something like an adventure genre.Read full review
Wow, If ya want to see a freaky mind twisting gutt wrenching movie than this is the one for you! Silent hill video game fans will find this movie holds very true to its name. This mind game begins as soon as the movie is started an doesn't slip throughout the entire film. You will follow the mother thru the lil town of Silent Hill, normal by day but sheer hell by night. You know when a foe is around you by the ear piercing music an static sounds, just like in the game! The story line is very fluent. The ending of this movie is awesome! But for those that are not familiar with Silent Hills mind twisting history, it may seem alil confusing. I give this film two thumbs up! I love it when a video game is done justice by making an awesome film! I bought this movie mainly to complement my collection of Silent Hill video games of which I have all titles. I also really enjoy horror and sci-fi films, a category in which this movie fits well. The movie was OK...not great which is what usually seems to be the case in spinoffs or sequels. The price was right so I feel a good deal was had. At some point in the future I will sell this collection of Silent Hill games, movie and whatever Silent hill item may come my way in the meantime, on e-bay as a complete set.
