Bought to use with a new 40d for wildlife pictures. VERY pleased with the results. You can buy better glass, but not for less than 3-4 times the cost. I've even got some great shots when handholding this monster, you just need a fast shutter and enough light. Very nicely blurred backgrounds, NO vignetting or CA at all (not using it with a full-frame sensor helps ). Pixel-peepers may complain that the photos aren't "tack-sharp", but the prints (even heavily cropped) look fantastic. At the wide end, the 50mm setting is so versatile I hardly ever use my 17-85mm anymore. Too heavy for a walk-around? Nah... just get a decent padded neck strap and you're good to go. If you choose to use a t-con with it, you'll want a tripod since it kills the autofocus... but with a reach of 700-1000mm with the t-con you won't mind. :)Read full review
I needed a 500mm top end for my 30D and have been using this lens for moonscapes and nature photography. Considering that with the 1.6 crop factor and a quality 2X converter I can shoot at effectively 1,600mm at about F:12 what more can you ask. No IS is no big deal, anyone not using a tripod and remote shutter at this end is either crazy or has a lot more stamina and control then most shooters I know. I have 3 Sigmas and a few Canon L lenses and I find that the quality is pretty much on par at least with the high end Sigmas, I cannot say this for their entry level glass. As stated before be ready to tote around some weight and get some odd looks from the general public when you twist this "Bigma" on. I say great value, great build and what else will do this without taking out a second mortgage on the house? Now get out and take some pictures! FloridaCameraRead full review
I used to carry 3 lenses around in a shoulder bag. ON THE PLUS SIDE: The Sigma eliminated the need for the extra baggage. Outdoors, I don't need wide angle that much; the 50mm setting is fine for me. The 500mm setting is clear and sharp with one or two minor drawbacks. If you shoot on a humid day, you will be compressing moisture in the air, which will make your picture seem more hazy than normal. I strongly suggest using a polarizer with this lens - it will eliminate much of the haze and deepen color saturation. The internal focus motor is quick and quiet, but at the 500mm setting the lens will occasionally go in-and-out of focus - searching for the subject focal point. That can be fixed by changing your camera setting if you have multiple settings between spot and averae focusing. ON THE DOWN SIDE: This lens makes your camera VERY front heavy. You don't want to weaken your lens mount on the front of your camera.I had to purchase a monopod which solved the problem of shoulder fatigue. This is not a lightweight lens with all the interior lens groups. As a hobbyist, I'd rate this lens excellent in picture quality, and good on ease of use and handling.Read full review
I have really enjoyed taking photos with this lens. I tend to shoot fast moving subjects, such as model airplanes, and it has given me great photos. I wish it had a lock for the 500mm, but that is trivial. The weight of the lense is a definite factor if you are walking for a while and don't have a place to set it down. At 4 lbs., it is quite a bit carry. I have chosen it to be one the main lens that I carry all the time. I bought this for the 500mm as well as the 50mm capability. I have the 400mm IS lense,500mm lense, the 170-500mm lense, and a 600mm lense and this is the best of all that I have purchased. I have photos at http://www.pbase.com/nc911/011407_flying_rc_planes if you would like to see what I captured. John
Compared with the new stabilized telephoto lenses, this version has the drawback of being easily blurred at longer focal lengths, but it costs a heck of a lot less, too. It needs to be used with a tripod and in bright lighting, where it does very fine work, if a tad soft at the 400-500mm range. I'm not thrilled, but I'm liking it fine, until I win the lottery and can afford another.
