This book is great. It has lot of formulas that are very useful, especially when designing shafts, springs, gears, power screws, clutches, etc.... Is a most have for reference, and if you are taking any exam for your engineering license or engineering degree, it has useful information. THE INTERNATIONAL VERSION JUST USES AND GIVES TABLES FOR INTERNATIONAL UNIT. Overview: The eighth edition of Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design maintains the basic approaches that have made this book the standard in machine design for over 40 years. At the same time it combines the straightforward focus on fundamentals instructors have come to expect with a modern emphasis on design and new applications. Overall coverage of basic concepts are clear and concise so that readers can easily navigate key topics. This edition includes a new case study to help illuminate the complexities of shafts and axles and a new finite elements chapter. Problem sets have been improved, with new problems added to help students progressively work through them. The book website includes ARIS, which is a homework management system that will have 90 algorithmic problems. Very useful for the class I'm taking, easy to understand. The content is well classified and easy to understand. The examples reflects actual problems and also are very well explained, step by step.
This book is a great starting point for anyone looking to begin engineering design. The author does a great job of covering material in a descriptive yet interesting manner. Lots of useful equations and good graphs and pictures to boot.
This is a great reference book. Some of the steps are left out so it may not be the best text book, BUT THEN AGAIN THAT IS WHY YOU GO TO LECTURE! This book has a ton of information and is a great resource. I used it for the PPE exam and was very happy using it to prepare and during the exam. Almost all of the book is in S.I. (some examples are still in English), but all of the reference tables have both. This is a great book. Period.
I had to buy this book as a required text for one of my classes. It turns out this book is pretty straight forward as far as the new materials it teaches. It does not go through much review, but rather just throws out formulas throughout the text. These formulas are briefly described and are referenced from other books. I would give this book a 4 out of 5.
