This is one of our favorite movies of all time. Rolicking fun but certainly not PC these days, being based on kidnapping to obtain brides and all....... It is unusual in that MGM hedged their 1954 Cinemascope bet by ALSO filmed it in standard full screen, for theaters without Cinemascope equipment.. NOT a conversion, but a total separate filming. Usually you find this offered in DVD only as the Cinemascope version, as shown here. However that appears in a letterbox format on 16x9 TV screens. We found that we prefer the STANDARD version which fills ANY TV screen. There may be some subtle differences between the two

These days it is difficult to find a movie that suits everybody's tastes - some like comedies, others like science-fiction, some like romances, etc. Well, this is definitely not sci-fi, but it does classify as a musical-somewhat comical- "oldie-but-goodie"-movie. Even the men in our family like this one. The story surrounds a family of men. The oldest, Adam, goes to town to find a wife. Surprise to all, he marries and he and his bride return to the farm in the mountain. Unknown to the bride, Adam has 6 brothers at home! She becomes the cook, cleaner, laundry lady for all of them....BUT on HER terms! She teaches them manners and how to treat a lady. She teaches them enough that they become interested in finding themselves wives. So, the story unfolds and the tale goes on with their saga to find wives for the remaining six brothers.Read full review
This is one of my favorite musicals of all time. I have owned a VHS copy for awhile, and recently purchased the DVd for my sister's birthday. I am a huge fan of Howard Keel and Jane Powell. Keel makes a wonderful Adam, and even though he is a bit misguided on interacting with other people, you can't help but fall in love with him. Jane Powell was such a tiny woman, and yet her voice could shake a moutain. Also gerat are the supporting actors and actresses, such as Tommy Rall and Julie Newmar. If you like this movie, definitely see Kiss Me Kate and Showboat (both with Keel as the lead).
MY WIFE AND I SAT DOWN TO WATCH THIS MOVIE!! I DIDNT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. WHEN THE MUSIC AND DANCING STARTED I STARTED TO GET ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT!! THE STORY IS ABOUT SEVEN BROTHERS WORKING TOGETHER. WHEN THE OLDEST BROTHER - HOWARD KEEL- FALLS IN LOVE THE OHER BROTHERS GET JEALOUS.SO THE COUPLE FIX THEM UP WITH OTHER GIRLS FROM TOWN AND THEY ALL DANCE LAUGH, AND HAVE A GREAT TIME GETTING MARRIED!! SO YOU HAVE SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS!! A GREAT MOVIE!! WONDERFUL DANCING AND A WHOLE LOT OF FUN FOR THE FAMILY!!! THANK YOU!! OAKLANDRDRFAN.... MARK
This film was basically a musical. The story line was fair. The singing was very good, the dancing was excellent.
