I bought a this knowing that it was broken as a repair and upgrade project. Having never owned a Game Gear, I needed the console, cartridges, and a power supply. I replaced the capacitors and fixed the battery contacts and now the system plays games with sound but no video. The project is going great -- just waiting on a new modern LCD kit and the system will be better than new.

The Game Gear is a blast from the past that will keep even today's kids entertained for many many hour. This is an 8 bit gaming system with a fairly large game selection, and like most Sega products has a lot of neat addons and supporting hardware available.. The generation of color passive LCD that the Game Gear uses don't compare to today's LCD technology but that does not mean you cannot get a neat gaming experience. The blurring of the screen actually can make blocky graphics smooth and look better in some ways. The Game Gear is just the right size to hold for many hours without the cramping hands you get with many of these small gaming systems of today. Many systems out there suffer from the faulty capacitors of the day, but its an easy fix for anyone with a little experience in electronics or soldering such. Great system for what they go for todayRead full review
For those that have never purchased a Sega Game Gear my suggestion is to purchase this product. I have bought Game Gears in the past and due to the capacitors break down. Who go through the hassle. I felt the product was really solid and I am happy with the purchase. Now I have it on my bookshelf while I play my modded one with the McWill screen.

If you are looking for more Shining force games look no further. The Sega Gamegear was a handheld console ahead of it's time, with full color handheld gaming. the only downfall was the six double a battery's. I will say that the US library of games is not as good as the Japanese library, but it still has some quality titles such as Shining Force Gaiden, and Chakan the forever man. In my opinion the Game gear comes second only to the Gameboy in terms of classic handheld gaming console. So if you are looking for a good time and you are a classic game player go ahead and pick up one of these cool and unique devices
Recently, I received my Sega Game Gear bundle from a very honest, friendly, E-Bay seller Chase Foster of Texas. Thank you Chase, for the great Game Gear bundle! Now I'll get to the review. The Sega Game Gear was Sega of America's answer to Nintendo's Game Boy. The GB went on to become the most popular handheld gaming device, despite only having a plain lcd screen that displays graphics in black & white only. The GG had it's own share of good games, just not enough to compete with the GB. The battery life on the GG is not very good. The GB has 10 hrs with alkaline batteries. Had Sega come up with more games, the GG would have been more successful than the GB. I love the big screen & nice colors on the GG. It feels comfortable in my hands when playing. Nowadays, there is still a good selection of games available on E-Bay, for good prices. Whether you're an old school gamer or someone who recently discovered the GG, this console is definitely worth buying.Read full review
