I saw the original 6 Scenes from a Marriage television series on Danish TV, with Danish subtitles, in the 1970's and saw the heavily-edited single telecast some years later on PBS and regretted the excisions from one of Bergman's greatest creations. Therefore, I was happy to obtain the three-disc DVD edition, which lets you see and compare both versions and which provides some excellent special features as well. As another reviewer noted, it is good that both versions are presented in the original Swedish with English subtitles. Dubbing would have destroyed much of Johan and Marianne's smugness in the first episode and would have removed much of the fury, passion, and pain in episodes 4-6. The condensed version badly foreshortens the dissolution of the marital relationship and, in removing the TV serial framing of the story, removes an element that kept millions of eyes glued to European TV screens week after week to see drama that "hit them where they live." Being able to see both versions lets you decide which version you prefer. The enormous success of the TV series in Europe in all socioeconomic groups shows that high-quality drama can succeed on TV when presented with honesty and immediacy by a great artist. The video quality on the discs is fine, which is remarkable for a 30-plus-years-old TV series transferred to another medium.Read full review
