Caveat Emptor! Book Buyer Beware!
I was very disappointed with this book, but I guess beggars can't be choosers. I needed more real, released exams for my students, and the official SAT Guide made sure to provide it. However, neither my students nor I were prepared for just how many errors exist throughout this edition. I truly feel that the College Board rushed to release its 10 Official Exams. I can't tell you how many errors I found in the math, reading, and writing sections. Some blogs even speculate that the `typos' may exist on purpose so that College Board can maintain its high levels of confusion with the SAT. (One math problem had 3 typos!) As I learned in Law School, "Caveat Emptor!" or "Buyer Beware." Another aggravating aspect of this book is that the new edition has 7/10 exams that can be found directly from ... I found this particularly unfair to students who strive to study from the most updated material, when in reality, it's not so updated. This year, many students had to pay almost $25 for a book containing only 3 new tests, when they thought the College Board was selling 10. The only major difference is that now, tests 3-10 have lots and lots of typos. I can't help but wonder why the almighty College Board couldn't hire someone to proofread the book properly before it went to print.... unless the errors may in fact not be so 'unintentional.' In conclusion, The Official SAT Guide is only good if you go through the questions with a highly knowledgeable friend or a reliable tutor. (May I suggest Kweller Prep for those living in the tri-state area?) Aside from the yellow errata sheet (that only some books provide), I found dozens of mistakes, which was quite aggravating as a tutor. I can only imagine how confusing it must be for students. I do, however encourage this purchase; there are 10 official exams, and you can at least benefit from that. The order was delivered on time. We have used the book. The problem is with the book. College Board says that if you use and study the book well you will conquer the SAT. Not neccessarily true. We studied and took the tests for days and I checked the answers and rated the score. My student did really well on the tests in the book but did not score well on the real test. SAT is just another hoop created by the college board for students to jump through that gives no real indication of a students ability to learn nor succeed in college. Yet, if you're taking the SAT, I would reccomend the hoop.The order was delivered on time. We have used the book. The problem is with the book. I am preparing to go to college at the age of 49. Back in the Stone Age, we didn't take SAT's, so preparing for the exam is mandatory. The Official SAT Study Guide is written by the College Board, so unlike many other SAT preparation books on the market, provides exactly what is needed to the student preparing for the exam. Helpful, time-saving tips are included throughout the book to help the student learn to manage their time during the exam, which is valuable beyond measure, as each section of the exam is timed. It provides tips and short cuts in answering the questions to assure providing correct answers quickly. The Study Guide shows the student exactly what to expect on the exam, providing a break-down of each subject, i.e. how many questions and difficulty level in each subject, ... This is the 2009 2nd edition. I haven't completely gone through the book yet but I was expecting something smaller i guess? and not a lot of pages. HOWEVER, apon recieving this book it totally blew me away! I love this book and I'll never let it go! After flipping through the book there's annotations in the margins of the pages giving helpful tips on choosing answers and such. The only thing I don't like is the paper quality, I'm not a fan of the grayish colored pages, I wish they would have used regular white colored pages. I can't complain though, I'd tell anyone that's preparing for the SAT, SAT Subject tests, ACT etc. should buy this book! you'll be impressed (:This is the 2009 2nd edition. pretty good, but way too much info
ITS GOT EVERYTHING!!! math, reading, writing. but what it lacks is a consice way to present it. the book is as thick as an english dictionary. it's long too. the content is pretty organized chapter by chapter explaining the key concepts. but once again, it cant show you in a way that you wont get bored of in 15 minutes overall, if you want to study for the SAT, then buy this book!!!
