If you are looking for a way to assess reading comprehension in grades 1-6, this is the book for you! Each level, pre-primer through "junior high" (i.e. 7/8) has a word list (for miscue analysis and as a placement guideline for the passages) and 4 passages (two narrative and two expository). Each passage begins with an assessment of prior knowledge and prediction. Next, the teacher can do a running record. The third section has an assessment of recall. The fourth and final section has both explicit and implicit questions. The instructions are detailed and, surprisingly, there is a lot of information on increasing comprehension. I learned from this book that the number one predictor of high comprehension is prior knowledge. There are also case studies, showing the different ways a teacher can use the information as well as many options for gaining specific data the assessment. In short, it is a "highly recommended" book!Read full review
