Despite the extreme liberties 20th Century Fox took with the source material I've always been fond of this attempt to bring Hal Foster's strip characters to life. If one knows the Foster canon, it is obvious that the film/s writers referred to to it, but just took something from here and there and arranged the events the way that the powers that be wished. The late 1990 European feature has a few details more accurate to Foster but both films surfer from "What were they thinking?" However, as Fox's second feature in CinemaScope, PRINCE VALIANT is a handsome film and very enjoyable if one just wants an evening of entertainment...which is why I rate it highly. Let's face it. We'll never see a PRINCE VALIANT that does Hal Foster's creation justice, so let's be thankful for what we do have. And, if you're not familiar with the classic comic strip narrative from the early years one can just sit back and enjoy the story for what is was/is: A gorgeous Technicolor really wide screen adventure/romance. 'Nuff said.Read full review
