Pretty good for the price
These speakers are reasonably sturdy and a great value compared to MSRP. Mine came in perfect condition. I have them hooked up to a early 2000's bookshelf stereo with some basic speaker wire, nothing fancy. Very good bass response, treble is smooth and rolls off maybe a little early for my taste but sounds good. I compared these to some Klipsch bookshelf speakers I listened to a few years ago and those were unbearably harsh and had almost no bass so they were on the other end of the spectrum. GREAT SPEAKERS
This review is coming from an independent consumer I'm not affiliated with Polk in anyway, I repair receivers, in my repair shop I have 4 of these speakers that I use to test all my receivers, let me tell you I drive them HARD to ensure the receiver will not fail again, I have actually blown other inferior brand speakers out driving them as hard as I do, These speakers have handled everything I have thrown at them, I'm sure (as my neighbors would probably agree) I have taken them to their rated limits or beyond. they are some of the best sounding speakers I have had. A rare example of value and quality.
These speakers are an outstanding value. Impressive sound quality and construction. I have pushed them to their limit with no distortion. Calling them bookshelf speakers is a bit of a stretch unless you have a industrial bookshelf. But they worked out fine on top of my entertainment center. Great bang for the buck !
I consider myself an audiophile. I have 4 stereo systems around my home including my garage where I have these speakers with a small system powered by an 80 watt per channel Onkyo receiver with a KLH CD player, a Luxman K-111 cassette deck and the Polk Monitor 40's and I am so impressed how good they sound in a terrible place for acoustics like a garage. I mean I ran my spectrum analyzer and the levels were all over the place, yet these speakers are clear , concise and just bursting with great sound, as I said these deliver a great bang for the buck !. I also have a complete 5.1 home theater set up with all Polk speakers in my home theater system and they are fantastic as well. The more I listen the more I love my Polk audio systems they are clean and unbiased and deliver the music the way it was recorded. Another fine Polk product!
I own the monitor 40 series, 60 series and 70 series. I actually picked up the 40 series first due to an amazing price point ($100 for the pair, new from Polk) and was quite impressed. I then ordered the 60 series for around $250 for the pair. I like the 60's but if I had it to do all over again, I would have ordered 2 more pairs of 40 series and pocketed the remaining $50. The 40's just jam and take up half the space as the 60s. You almost can't call them bookshelf speakers though, because they are like 13" deep and ported in the rear. Allowing 1-2" for the port to properly vent, and you're talking about 15" from front to the rear. I actually had to go out and purchase deeper shelves to set these on, because you really don't want them sitting low on the floor. I don't know if they're worth the mfr list price of $370/ pair, but I would probably pay twice what I paid if the opportunity would present itself again. Now don't get me started on my beloved 70 series... If you have the chance, grab them before they are all gone!Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

An octave above
I have a set of Polk TSI 100s that I run with some Dayton T352s. These give a nice soundstage for my studio area, I was going to save for the Elac 2 6” for the living area. But these Polk Monitor 40c came up as a closeout and I didn1t hold myself back. I had heard that the Monitor 40 was about the same sound as the TSI 200 but not as loud as the TSI 200. I knew the Monitor 40 was a nicer fit and finish than the TSI series but I thought they would sound the same. In fact, the Monitor 40 sounds a bit better than the TSI 100. You don’t need to listen a to a whole sons to see quite an improvement. The Monitor 40 sounds similar but nicer and prouder with better vocals; just a noticeable bit. I am tickled with the TSI 100 but the Monitor 40 is an octave above.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
