Chile es uno de los participantes mas importantes del ambito pesquero internacional. En 2006, Chile llego al quinto puesto del mundo en terminos de produccion por pesca de captura, al septimo en cuanto a produccion acuicola, y fue el septimo exportador de pescado y productos de pescado. En los caladeros chilenos, las especies mas abundantes son las especies pelagicas - jurel, sardina, anchoa y caballa - fundamentalmente pescadas por una flota industrial moderna. La cria de salmon y trucha dominan en la produccion acuicola. Existe tambien una gran flota artesanal que cuenta con derechos de acceso exclusivo a las aguas a cinco millas de la costa, aportando trabajo y alimento a muchas comunidades costeras. Este informe describe el reto que ha supuesto el complejo proceso de aprendizaje que el sector pesquero y acuicola chileno ha llevado a cabo y la evolucion de sus politicas y sistemas de gestion. El marco politico que regula el sector ha evolucionado considerablemente durante los ultimos cincuenta anos. El gobierno de los sectores industrial, artesanal y acuicola ha seguido diferentes trayectorias de desarrollo de politicas y la gestion actual refleja las presiones concretas a las que cada segmento del sector hace frente. Chile ha tenido que afrontar cuestiones de sobreinversion, severos descensos en los niveles de captura, disputas entre las partes implicadas, disminucion del tamano de las flotas y enfermedades acuicolas, entre otras. Y la evolucion de las politicas continua, con una serie de iniciativas en marcha para responder a los desafios actuales. El Estado Chileno ha sido una de las principales fuerzas que se encuentran tras estos avances, sirviendo de base para un sector pesquero y acuicola solido y robusto.
