I previously owned a set of HP BD240, BD335 and BD340 SATA Bluray Optical Disk Drives and this drive is noticeably faster than those previous generation drives. HP stopped making optical disk drives and I have always preferred Pioneer who design and manufacturer their own drives as opposed to some of the other larger brands who outsource manufacturing to others and just rebrand them as their own. The aforementioned HP Bluray drives are in fact manufactured by Lite-On and just rebranded by HP. I would have preferred the newer Pioneer 4K Ultra Bluray disk drives which have just hit the market but these 16X BDR-209DBK support BDXL format which my previous drives did not and are still within my budget. I will have to wait for more competition to lower prices on 4K Bluray drives.

I've had them for about a week now. Both tested out perfectly and both are now installed. Since I always burn BD-R's at the lowest possible speed, I have no idea how these drives (or my older ones) record at higher speed. I just reminded myself - I need to order another hundred or so discs. I'll go do that RSN (real soon now)!!

I have only read and wrote half a dozen discs, but it seemed to be a little slow, but then I am new to Blu ray. 6 discs, no coasters, a learning experience compared to DVD, as I find I have to have a menu or there is no screen asking you to hit the button to play ;-) I really like the fact that I have had no coasters, and the simplicity of installation and use. I used "Serif Movie Plus X6" to master the discs and it worked perfectly!!

I have a huge Blu-ray collection that I needed to backup to my media server and this drive is the highest rated among media developers. With MakeMKV I get bit-perfect backups. The drive is fast, reliable, and quiet. I installed in a USB 3.0 external chassis to make it an external device that I can connect to different computers. Windows 7 recognizes it just like a DVD drive. I only use it for backing up Blu-rays to my media server but you can download a free Blu-ray player software to watch Blu-rays on your computer or for authoring Blu-ray movies from Premiere of Final Cut. I highly recommend this drive over the external one because this one is faster and will last longer because of its design.
