Mid 1990's medical disaster film about a disease that was discovered in Africa years before. Back when many of the African nations were under communist upheaval and civil wars raged everywhere, a small village suffered an outbreak of a viral infection that killed everything and everybody. Thinking that it would just go away and eradicate itself, nothing was done about it. But now, it somehow made its way to the U.S. in the host of a monkey. The infected animal is stolen and sold and the "outbreak" begins in the fictional California town of Cedar Creek. In typical fashion, the population begins getting sick. Dustin Hoffman plays a virologist investigating the outbreak, and trying to figure out how it is spreading, and how to contain it. It is discovered that the government was aware of it from years before, and along with some military officials, contingency plans for potential weaponization and a cure were developed. The problem is that the nature of the virus has changed, and now they have no idea how to stop it. All of a sudden, there is this hair-brained scheme to drop a bomb on the area and kill the disease (along with everybody living there). Of course, this plan is thwarted and everybody survives due to another mutation of the virus to a benign status. Actually a pretty good movie, although woefully predictable, throughout. This movie boasts an all-star cast of Dustin Hoffman as Sam Daniels, Cuba Gooding Jr. as Major Salt, Morgan Freeman as the General in Charge, Patrick Dempsey as the thief who steals the infected monkey, Rene Russo as Hoffman's estranged scientist wife, and Donald Sutherland as head man who was in on the virus back at the time it was discovered.
