Love this group. They play great music and don't just bang stuff out. Oh.. I'm 68 years old. Also recommend Tangerine Dream.

I bought this on the strength of hearing a 20 second excerpt of 'Time to Pretend' (track 1) because I thought it sounded a bit out of the ordinary. I have now played the album so much that to me it feels like one of those albums that help define a time in my life - a classic - and I love it. Everyone else I've played it to doesn't get it - it's love it or loathe it. The earlier tracks are (over?)produced funky tunes that will feel familiar yet fresh to those who appreciate mid-late seventies disco. Half way through the album it changes to a more (to my ear) late sixties-early seventies trippy, hippy style groove but still with a slightly spiky edge. Track 2 is my least favourite and when I listen start to finish to the whole album the last couple of tracks do sound less co-ordinated to me than the rest. Some of the lyrics make me feel about a hundred years old and are definitely on the youthful side of meaningful, however, I'm not hearing too much else around that is similar so that's a good thing. If you like the Mika/Scissor Sisters style idiosyncratic, overblown retro thing then give it a try. Bland it ain't.Read full review
How Is It That Two Young Musician’s (Ben Goldwasser & Andrew VanWyngarden) Both In Their 20s, Can Be So In Touch With The Rhythms, Melodies,& Overall Feel Of The Great Music From The 60s & 70s? A Term Has Been Used Lately To Describe Some New Music & I Never Thought It Was Appropriate....But The Term "Future Classic"....Is MGMT!....There Are No Others!...Not Only Do I Think In The Future This Band Will Be Referred To As Classic..But Also Classic In That Presently They Take You To Another Time & Place.....If You Are Into Bands Like, The Beatles, Hall & Oates, Supertramp, David Bowie, T.Rex, Then You'll Know What I Mean When You Hear "Oracular Spectacular" ,& Yet Their Music Is Fresh, & Within The Modern Rock Era, I Think Their Sound Is Timeless. I Can't Even Express How Much I Love This Band. Being A Fan Of Music For 40+ Years Its Not Often That I've Felt Compelled To Write A Statement Of This Kind. The Reason's I've Always Loved Music Are Represented By MGMT.I Think, To Hear Of This Album & Not Buy It, Is A Missed Opportunity To Feel Good Many Times Over. There Is So Much More I Could Say, But I'll Spare You... If I Found Out Someone Couldn't Buy The CD For Themself, I Would Buy One For Them!.......Craig JohnsonRead full review
