I have always demoted my "old" receiver to my classroom when I have upgraded at home. An old AIWA went to school when I got my first Onkyo. Last year various functions on the AIWA started going out. Instead of taking the home Onkyo to school and buying an upgrade model for home, I purchased the TX SR-500 used for a great price and took it to school. As an older model, it doesn't have some of the surround decoding and other features that the new 500 series receivers offer, but it's perfectly fine for providing clear sound throughout the room whether I show an educational DVD or a theatrical release with surround audio; when I play music or other audio, I use the "5-speaker stereo" mode to distribute the sound so everyone can hear it without having to crank up the volume up and annoy the classes in neighboring rooms. I've got the used Onkyo, a set of small but adequate (used) surround speakers, and a small powered subwoofer. The sound is great for a classroom, though it won't impress an audiophile, and the total investment was about $140 over a few years.Read full review
Everything about it works flawlessly and as intended. Plenty of features for a entry-level receiver. Has a sub pre-out, switchable A and B speaker channels, and many inputs. Although, it is old, so no HDMI. 5.1 uses component, digital coaxial, or digital optical. The one I purchased seems to have a faulty wiring problem with the power cable. When the cable connected to the receiver's back is bent at an angle, the power cuts off. Solution is to not fiddle with the receiver too much, and give it plenty of room in the rear. It also gets warm, like all other receivers, so proper ventilation is a must.
I have three systems in my home. One is a Polk Audio , One is a pioneer,Two are sony, and the last is a Onkyo. The Sonys are the newest ones and sound quality is fair.I leave those in the basement.I dont see those as quality systems and remain in my lower level bar area. just 4 music. The polk is in my bedroom and is relatively decent sound but not worth the money I spent on them. I bought it on a no return policy and I'm really pissed about the quality. Pioneer....Gave it to my 4 year old....nuff said. Now the Onkyo , I paid around $400 for it about 4 or 5 years ago and it out jams and out does anything Ive ever owned. Anyone that give them a bad rap its ignorant because onkyo rates on my list and ALL my friends list as #1. My buddy came over 4 a party and heard my Onkyo, then when out a week later and purchased a 1000 watt receiver. We love our systems and recommend them to ALL. For the money it is the best out there. The EQ has alot of possabilities, you just have to adjust them to your speakers.I know because I use Sony surround speckers w/ mine and they sound remarkable. Dont listen to bad reviews because the dont mean junk. Listen to a true owner!BUY BUY BUY...Sammy from OhioRead full review
I like my Onkyo receiver because it has adequate power and is fairly intuitive to use and setup. I was able to use it right away without even reading the owner's manual. The sound is very good with no noticeable distortion. I would think that most people that consider buying this receiver would be very happy with it.
After my Sony STR-DE835 died I started shopping for a replacment. I have now owned the Onkyo TX-SR500 for about 5 years and it has had no problems. The quality blew the Sony out of the water. I believe the Sony was rated at 100 watts per channel and the Onkyo was 85. Sony way overated their Amp because the Onkyo is more powerful with 1/3 volume than the Sony was at 3/4. The sound quality is much cleaner on the Onkyo. I'm sure there are better units out there now but this unit still has alot to offer for the price. PS. Make sure you use a good heavy speaker wire. If you buy a box surround sound package the wire they give you is almost always inferior. I started with Infinty Sterling Speakers and now I have Polk. The Polk perform great with the Onkyo.
