Notes
Raag Todi is a morning raga that expresses both heroic and devotional moods. It has six notes in the ascent and seven notes in the descent. The Raag begins with Alaap, Jor, and Jhalla. Then follows two compositions set to a rhythmic cycle of sixteen beats known as Teental. 'In the beginning there is the musician, the instrument, and the audience. In the end, all three merge into the Ocean of Sound.' - K. Sridhar Both K. Sridhar and K. Shivakumar began their training in Carnatic music in infancy from their renowned vocalist mother who descends from thirteen generations of temple musicians from Tanjore. Around the age of 4 and 6, K. Sridhar chose the sarod as his instrument and K. Shivakumar chose the violin. They studied their respective instruments under the guidance of Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, the foremost rudra veena player of his time and an internationally known expert in the devotional Dhrupad style. This focused training bore fruit by way of numerous awards including the title of Sur Mani (Sky Jewel) at the famous Kal-Ke-Kalakar Festival in 1976. Although both brothers have gone on to create separate careers, they are highly respected for their 'jugalbandhi' or 'one idea speaking through two pairs of hands.' Their most recent Scandinavian tour brought rave reviews. 'Sublime Strings:...a universal tone language that can enchant even the most inexperienced listener.' - Copenhagen Observor, September 2002.
