Before bidding on the Nikon Monarch 4-16x42SF riflescope I researched extensivly online searching past articles from outdoor magazines and sport optics reviews. I choose the Nikon Monarch as it offered the best price for the features I wanted. I live in Washington State and I can be hunting Blacktail deer in rain forest conditions one weekend using the 4 power low setting and hunting Mule deer the next weekend in semi-desert areas using the 16 power setting. (Mule deer must be 3 point or bigger to harvest) The scope works great for both. It does not fog up hunting the cold, rainy coast and with the side focus I could go easily to a higher power setting if I needed to check out a deer moving thru a clear cut. The scope is very bright and clear and it looks real nice on my rifle. There is plenty of room for ring spacing which can be a issue with some of the other scopes out there. Price wise it is much more cost friendly then the other scopes I looked at. (I looked at Leupold, Bushnell Elite, and the Burris upper end models.) Scope shoots true, holds sight-in and fits budget. I bought this scope to mount on a FN PBR XP in .308, I've only shot with it a handful of times at 100 yards so far, So I haven't really had much play time with messing with range estimation with the Mil-Dots but seems easy enough with a bit of practice. Once I got it zeroed it has stayed right in there and i've put about 100 rounds through it. So far it has worked just as it should. I dislike the relatively small adjustment range (40 mils) but thus far it hasn't been an issue and at 16X zoom the picture isn't as clear. But I knew that going in. For the price you can't beat it.
I have been purchasing Nikon Rifle Scopes for a couple of years now mainly the Buckmaster Scope in 3-9x40. Wanted to do something alittle diffrent for my 270wsm. Overall the optics are clear and bright, side focus and the quick focus eye piece work great and are very smooth. Do I really think that it is a better scope than the Buckmaster. No I don't but I haven't had a chance to really strecth it out to over 400 yards. So I quess I'll have to wait and see if it out performs the Buckmaster scopes I normally use.
For the price you can not do better. 25 yrs using different scopes Nikon has them all beat for quality, clarity, and precision in manufacturing. Maybe my old eyes don"t see the way they use to but Nikon scopes ( I have five) and their binoculars (I have three) beat out Vortex, Burris and Leupould and a few low end scopes.
