Meet four classmates in their early teens, Cam, Darryl, Mole, and Louella --- each with a different set of values, each with a different home situation, each a testing ground for narrator Tod Whitney and his evolving moral compass. Early on in this coming of age story, Tod hops on to Mole's short and fast track, a route that takes the reader into the local high school's gator pit and on to a ride fueled by the duo's bullying, dishonesty, and sport of harassment. Tod follows Mole's lead until it takes one of their victims, the least likely of friends, to open Tod's heart and mind. With Mole's determination to be the driving force, however, Tod discovers he is long past the chance for an easy exit from their reckless ride.
