When first trying this GPS, I was not that impressed. The map options that Magellan has are either very poor, or very expensive. After a couple uses, the novelty was gone, and i was left with a GPS that i didnt think was worth even carrying around. Then i found a site that sold hi resolution TOPO maps, and for $7.00 i purchased a full set of USA maps. What a deal ! Magellan sells National Geographic maps, but theyre cost prohibitive, at $100+ they cost kore than the GPS. Now, the GPS is more than a novelty, it has become a part of every journey. I would suggest adding a set of LiPo batteries, as regular alkaline batteries only last about 4 hours, if the unit is allowed to auto-log your hike. With the LiPo batteries its good for a sun-up to sun-down journey.

Look I want to WARN all whom may buy one of these GPS--there are two kinds and they look identical- the map screen needs to have little index boxes at bottom -THEN it is knock off type and will NOT "GOTO" properly to a waypoint. Second way to tell -when you get it save a Waypoint-walk 200ft then go to that waypoint-if the green arrow and black arrow both do not show then you have a knock off. The ORIGINAL MAG TRITON 500 are awesome-the knock offs will get you lost BIGTIME. So they look the same -same color-same screen-not same software...

Bought this unit refurbished after reading about twenty reviews but was a little leery of what to expect. Have been working with the Triton 500 for about a week and after some want to send it back moments I got the feel of it. Very strong reception at all locations I have been. Great on land or water. Has way more operations then I will ever use for every day hunting and scouting. Love the media SD card slot, use that for the extra maps you can down load or copy from many sites. Love the many options for displaying the screen layouts, compass lay outs are great! Am trying the Geo maps that you do have to sign up for and wow is that a rush! All in all I have decided in a very short time of use I (LIKE THIS Triton 500)
I have owned numerous handheld gps', Magellan, Garmin and the like. The Triton 500, is what I find as the best all-around gps device for my activities. I whitewater raft the rivers of the Pacific northwest, about 350 miles a year. I have owned three Triton 500 models. The first took an oar into the screen, the second went swimming (waterproof but still sinks), and now the third with a stronger mount to keep it steady. With the sd card slot and the ability to load large amounts of topo maps, the Triton 500 handles the duty of what I need on the river well. If I were to design my own gps, I would start with the Triton 500, then add a louder speaker to warn me of upcoming rapids (can't hear the one on there now), make it floatable, and make the battery rechargeable.
I bought the Magellan Trition 500 because it provides many features for a comparable low price. Due to this, I considered it initially a good deal. However, my main purpose for this GPS device was to use it for geotagging. My summary for this is: If you need a GPS device for geotagging, then don't buy the Magellan Trition!! It has a very small logging memory. Even so, I inserted a 1GByte SD card, the Magellan Triton 500 is not able to store the GPS track in that big memory. It only is able to store it in the tiny internal memory. If you drive by care, then this internal memory is usually full within 90 minutes! Hence, it is not useful for geotagging! After some time I bought an additional topo map from Magellan direct. This top map is not very useful. It provides only a minimum of information. The quality of the Maggelan topo map is very poor. I don't know if the National Geography map is better. Well, this is all I can say about the Magellan Trition 500. - The general features are OK (compared with the price). - Geotagging does not work well. - Customer support is not existing.
