"Cyrano de Bergerac" may be the most romantic story ever written, such drivel to some, that it is unwatchable. Suspending one's disbelief is truly a task. I saw it first as a boy, its having been recommended by my father for its swordplay and other masculine heroics than for its sad, unrequited love. It was the dueling and bravery, the cockiness of the main character that drew my ten year old mind to it. Then, when a teenager, I studied the play with my tenth grade class, and I became drawn to the sentimentality of the lines a lover might say while wooing a woman. After all I myself was looking at the opposite sex, and had already been "in love" once. I could have use a Cyrano to tell me what girls wanted to hear. When I became a teacher, I taught "Cyrano..," adressing his toughness to the boys, his tenderness to the girls, although I am sure that to some extent each gender was attracted to the whole character. Now I still love the story and its enactment. Jose Ferer is a fabulous Cyrano. His comical nose is so long, it makes one laugh nearly to the point of forgetting that it has spoiled its bearer's opportunity to court any woman. In fact there are many holes in the play that make it tough to enjoy. Still I had to have it for my collection, not because it is a failed tragedy fallen by acident to comedy. I own it because its lines, corny though some may be, bring me to tears. Its characters are so impossibly romantic that I am drawn to them. Of course they are remotely recognizable. Maybe its because I have some ideal in me that people should be like Cyrano to love beyond the stars and maintain standards of ethics we would wish for all politicians. I will always enjoy "Cyrano de Bergerac." And soon I will will watch it with my grandchildren.Read full review
This is one of the finest movies ever made! This film has it all. The talent, the script, the action everything that goes in to a film. If you are into the high end special effects that we have become used to from todays movies you will be disapointed. This film surpasses the films that have been released for the last year for the most part and certainly the acting is far superior to anything we could find today. Jose Ferrer is the comsumate Cyrano de Bergerac, his style and delivery in this performance is breath taking. It is not possible for me to find anything negative to say about this film as it displays the very best and most noble spirit that a man can have and this is done with natural style and grace combined with an unmatched strength as demonstrated by Mr. Ferrer.
This is the Cyrano de Bergerac that was made in 1956 and won Jose Ferrer an Oscar for best actor that year. The score by Dimitri Tiomkin was wonderful and the movie was scripted by Carl Forman of Guns of Navarone fame. I say honestly that the movie is terrific and holds up very well considering that it's 50 years old. I love watching old movies but find that too many are really terrible and just don't quite hold up. This one is a gem and left a tear in my eye when it ended. I can not remember the last time a movie did that. I give this one 5 stars and I'm glad to be able to add it to my collection. up
The DVD is a straight transfer from one form of media to another. There have been no efforts to restore or update the existing film that I had purchased on VHS years ago. The movie stands the test of time as a very good performance of Cyrano's story. I can see why Jose Ferrer received the Oscar in 1950 for Best Actor for this film. I highly recommend it to anyone.
Exceptional use of the English language and true to the book. "Cyrano de Bererac" has possitively stood the time test. Wish they'd come out with a restored version and clean up the sound. I had to turn up the sound in certain areas. Still a great movie.
