time and temperature
The RTC chip includes a temperature sensor (updated every 64 seconds in order to temperature-compensate the clock oscillator) which can be read, in the same manner as the time and date values, with 0.25°C resolution. So you get not only a 4kB memory chip and a RTC, but also a temperature sensor. Seems that power reaches the chip only from the side with the 6 header pins soldered on, and not from the side with 4 holes. Seems that the 4-hole side is only for daisy-chaining to additional I2C slaves. The RTC chip is easy to use with an Arduino Uno and the Wire library. By the way, the address-select jumpers are only for the EEPROM memory chip; the RTC chip has a fixed address.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Extremely accurate, easy to use, but OVERCHARGE HAZARD at 5v
I set the module this morning and it is still exactly on time, no loss or gain. Accuracy is definitely within spec and I expect it to gain or lose at most a minute per year without even touching the calibration register. With calibration, I see this being accurate to +- 10 seconds a year. Great for set and forget applications. This device is easy to use. It is simple enough that no library is needed for interfacing, just the address table found in the ds3231 datasheet and the Wire library for Arduino. The only downside of this product is that there is a resistor and diode to recharge the coin cell. While this would work off of 3.3 volts, this could DANGEROUSLY OVERCHARGE the coin cell at 5 volts and significantly reduce its life or even possibly become a fire hazard due to lithium plating. According to the datasheet, the RTC should last around 10 years off a CR2032 cell, so what is even the point? To prevent this problem, cut the trace going from the red diode to the coin cell positive terminal.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Good real time clock, be aware it's the "M" version
Can't beat this RTC for the price. Be aware that this one ships with the DS3231M version of the chip, which works fine for time but does NOT allow you to set the square wave output pin to anything other than 1 Hz. If you need the pin to produce another frequency (I needed 1024 Hz) you need to look for a DS3231N version. Still a very good price for a solid RTC.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
