Even the brief nudity and good looking girls could'nt save this movie! Absolutely by far and away one of the worst movies I have seen. About the only thing this DVD is good for is skeet shooting target practice! Throw the disc in the air and hit it! This movie should be in the sports section and listed under "targets".

Laura Henderson (Judi Dench) is an unconvential socialite widow who launches into creating a live theatre venue in London in the 1930s. She hires a manager for the theater (Bob Hoskins) and off they go, approaching WWII. It doesn't take long for their Windmill theatre to become a nude review -- but all done very tastefully -- frequently patronized by the young men going off to war. Dame Judi was marvelous in this film. Hoskins was even better! Apparently Hoskins worked for years to bring this true story to the screen. He remembers Mrs. Henderson's live review from when he was a boy in London during the War. At the end of the film, many of the surviving real women from the Windmill -- now in their mid-80s and older -- were shown.
I bought this DVD because I thought it might give me a little insight into English Burlesque at that time in history. I think this movie was very enjoyable and well done. Bob Hoskins and Judy Dench are well paired in this film. However, it's definitely not for the kids, or those squeemish about male and female full frontal nudity. There is a scene where almost the entire cast strips down to nothing, but it's actually a very humorous part of the movie, and tastefully done, in my opinion. As far as Burlesque goes, I wasn't totally disappointed either in what I learned. It might be considered too "burlesque lite", for the hard-core Burlesque afficionado, but it gave me ideas to research further on my own. I'll definitely watch it again. I bought this because I love Judi dench and had not seen the film. She andd the rest of the cast are wonderful. It is refreshing to see her play this type of character tinged with Auntie Mame characteristics, a dash of rudeness and lust and a zest for life. I didn't reealize this film was based on a true story making it more intriguing. A must see for the plot, acting, and just plane damned high quality production. There wasn't a thing I did not like about this film. I will watch it again and again.
