I am in no way affiliated with Marantz. I recently purchased a refurbished Marantz SR 6001 7.1 channel Receiver for a good discount. These are my experiences so far. To begin with it looks fantastic, very well built with subtle understated styling that will look good with any other components. Making all the connections was pretty easy since the back has a good layout, the only thing I would change there is that it's a little bit hard to make the speaker connections if you use the binding posts, and there should really be a chassis ground terminal. Setup is a painless process due to the OSD and it was nice being able to easily assign all of the HD video and digital audio inputs at will. Audyssey left a bit to be desired in the EQ section, but it's a good starting point. I place a very high importance on manual EQ and crossover controls because its important to match your sound system to your listening space. In my example flat EQ was very bright and uncomfortably trebley due to the amount of tile in my house. It's difficult and expensive to add a digital EQ to a 5.1 or 7.1 system so it's nice that Marantz has one built in that can be adjusted either per channel or for all channels at once. The built in EQ doesn't have the same "feel" as an analog EQ but it is functional and serves its purpose. I/O is better than many other receivers in the same price range with 4 assignable HD inputs and plenty of digital audio inputs. One of the greatest features that it has is the ability to up-convert any source to HDMI. I would like to note that many people complain about how a number of receivers (this one included) don't up-convert composite or S video input signals to 1080 but rather 480 or 720, the reason for this is that there is no benefit in converting a composite or S-Video signal to 1080 as apposed to 720 or even 480. Up-conversion is not designed to and doesn't in any way improve quality. At best it leaves it completely the same. It merely changes the type of signal being used. Think of an old worn out recording on a cassette tape, even if you record it to the latest digital format the original source material is still a worn out cassette, you will have a wonderful and very accurate recreation of that worn out cassette. Don't get me wrong this up-conversion is GREAT, it lets you switch between all of your sources without changing inputs on the TV, and gives you a few other nice options as far as wiring, dubbing, etc. You can hook up all different types of I/O and the receiver will output any of them to all of the outputs. They could have included more HDMI inputs but if you need more you can always pick up a Marantz VS3002 which is a 6 in 2 out HDMI switch. It's really a great unit that I would recommend because you can plug the 2 outputs into the 2 HDMI inputs on the receiver and then you are able to route all of the HDMI inputs between the 2 zones independently. which is pretty cool. The only things that I wish it did were to down-convert from HDMI to analog, and I also wish that Audyssey worked a little better, like if you could put in a target curve and then Audyssey could match it.Read full review
I did more than my share of homework, before settling on the Marantz SR6001 receiver. It has more than enough power to supply audiophile sound to my 7.1 surround sound system. I also selected this model because of its internal HDMI switching and its ability to be controleld via RS232 for full home automation control. I am also a big fan of the internal audio calibration via Audyssey mic. I dont really have any negetives about this product. The unit works great and gives you very high end features for an average mans income:D
This receiver was very well planned. It is intuitive, well-appointed with current inputs and outputs. It is also somewhat backward compatible although, sadly, it lacks a phono input. The build quality is terrific. The only concern is the expense and sullied reputation of Marantz support. The authorized dealers seem to be as frustrated in this respect as the customers. If it holds together, I will be a very happy owner appreciative of the sound quality, extraordinary construction and thoughtful, advanced engineering.
The 7.1 surround sound is awsome. Plenty of power. Numerous inputs for all your entertainment needs. With a nice set of speakers you cant go wrong. I went with Polk Audio. Monitor 60's for the front, CS1 for center, M30's for sides and rear. For the sub PSW10. Music or movies you will not be dissapointed.
