I bought the Model 4000 to replace an older Magellan thats maps had become outdated. I have always liked Magellan's address lookup more than any of the other GPS units. Sometimes you can't seem to get the spelling right, but with the Magellan units you can whittle it down by elimination. It does what it is supposed to do as a GPS unit. It is now battery powered also, so for those short trips all you need is the unit itself. Magellan has eliminated one of the features I really liked. Under 1/10th of a mile a yellow ribbon would open at the bottom of the screen and get smaller as you approached the turn. That way you could anticipate the turn before you get the "Ding" alarm. Without this feature you are limited to "your turn is in .1 mile". That is 528ft.
I bought the Magellan Maestro 4000 for its screen size (4.3"), the product reliability, the SD card capability, and the AAA information that I use quite often when I travel. The screen is easy to read, and the voice prompts are are helpful and accurate. The map information is pretty accurate and is easy to make adjustments while driving. What I found it doesn't provide is highway exit markers. It only provides upcoming street names. When you are on the expressway, having access to the next exit number is really helpful. I know Garmin has this capability and I would say this is the main reason I gave the 4000 a good as opposed to an excellent rating. Maybe the newer versions have this capability. If not, I would suggest that Magellan add that capability.
This machine is easy to use! Took about 10 minutes to figure it out. Factory refurbished, but it may not matter. If you are a AAA member, AAA will extend manufacturer warranty by a year. All maps in the unit aseem to be quite current. Quick tips card really gets things working fast. I really bought this for my wife, who does some volunteer work for the local courts that can take her to places in the area that are, well, off our "beaten track". Like many ladies, she's a little tecnology-intimidated. She semed to be comfortable working with it very quickly. I suppose it would be nice to have voice recognition built into the unit but, frankly, the way we'll use it is for one address at a time and the keyboard-based functions will be just fine. Looking around ebay, factory refurbed Magellan 4000s are avaliable in the $100 +/- range . If you need a relatively high-end GPS at a reasonable price. i think you won't be disappointed.Read full review
I was immediately impressed with the ease of use on all of the Magellan products. When I went into Best Buy to try some of them out, I picked up a Magellan GPS and immediately knew how to use it without any books or manuals. The touch screen interface is very intuitive and user friendly. When I make a wrong turn or go off route to avoid traffic, the device reroutes immediately alerts me that it is rerouting and completes the new directions in less than 5 seconds every time. I love that the Magellan Maestro 4000 comes preloaded with AAA Roadside Assistance information at the touch of a button. Since I bought this item, I have not gotten lost once. I travel lot and this unit has gone with me to Houston, Philadelphia, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and to my hometown, Dallas. I could not be more satisfied! The only con to this item is the fact that it is a relatively older model and some newer roads may not be listed. The maps are about 2 years old, but they are easily upgraded on Magellan's website using your computer and the USB cable that comes with it. You can also buy maps on CD and preloaded onto a SD card. This unit gets long battery life and the car adapter and AC adapter ensure that you will never run out of power. The longest I have used it without recharging is 3 hours and the batteries were showing no signs of giving out after that amount of time. You will be thoroughly impressed. All of my friends and family are green with envy when they ride with me!Read full review
i like that the gps unit is easy to use and it functions well. I like the availiable options that it has. It does the job for us. It has night mode that i like that turns on automatically. It puts icons on the map and shows gas stations, shopping, hotels, etc.. It is a good gps unit and i would recommend it to someone else.
